IVF question

if you've gone through IVF, would you mind telling me how many embryos they transferred?

my doctor is talking about putting 1 back in for the first IVF cycle, and of all the people i know who've gone through this, they all put back at least 2...but they were all over 35 and i'm 31. so maybe that's why?

he also said there would be about a 65% chance of pregnancy, but when i looked up their numbers, it was more like 35%. i have a lifetime max for my insurance coverage, so i'm nervous about my dr. playing with a limited number of chances at this.

Re: IVF question

i was 31 for my first fresh IVF cycle and we put back 2. ultimately, it was our decision but that's what the dr recommended. i have heard of people putting back 1, to avoid the chance of multiples. to me, i felt like if i am going through all of this, i want to increase my chances of a pregnancy as best as possible.

i think there may be other factors involved too, like your age and maybe the quality of the embryos. we had a 3 day transfer and the quality of our embryos wasn't the best so i was happy with the decision to put back 2.

Re: IVF question

I am 27 and we put back three. I did not get pregnant, so I guess I fall into the 35%. I put back three at the recommendation of my doctor. Two of the three were perfect blasts and the third was a compacting morula. I know the doctor that did the transfer was less than pleased about putting back three, but we went ahead anyway and I didn't get pregnant at all.

I think it's totally up to you, but if I were you, I'd put back two. A lot of the doctors believe the rate of pregnancy doesn't increase that much even if you put back more embryos and all you do is increase the chance of mutiples.

Re: IVF question

They put back two five day blasts. I ended up pregnant with DD. I was 28 at the time.

Re: IVF question

My doctor also recommended putting back only 1. I will be 28 by the time we get started. My doctor’s goal would be to get me pregnant with a singleton pregnancy. My DH wants to put back 2. As for me, I am on the fence. I think that twins would be a blessing but I also know how difficult twin pregnancy’s can sometimes be and the increased chance of miscarriage or the babies being premature. I think in the end we will go with the doctor’s recommendation. My doctor also said that the recommendation could change based on how the embryos look and how they are growing. I also have a lifetime max ($50,000). My doctor said we should be able to get 7 or 8 cycles with that amount (praying it only takes one) because they have lower negotiated rates with the insurance company. But we do want to have more then one child and we want to make sure we have coverage for the future.

Re: IVF question

It really depends on what your infertility diagnosis is and how many mature follies you can produce with the drugs. For me, I'm 29 with high FSH of 14 and had only 3 mature follies that were fertilized. I did a 2nd day transfer and only 1 embryo made it. I only transferred 1. My doctor originally wanted to transfer all 3.

My fresh transfer was canceled due to some ohss, but we would have transferred 2. We went ahead with a FET a month or so later and 2 were transferred. I'm almost 19 weeks pregnant with a singleton. Oh, I'm 26.

Re: IVF question

1st IVF - 2 perfect Grade A embryos = Chemical

1st FET - 2 perfect embryos = M/C @ 6weeks

2nd IVF - 3 ok embryos = BFP (so far so good @5w3d

We decided to put back 3 because of our history of losses and our embies weren't so hot looking by Day 5.

Depending on your dx, quality of embryos, and which day you do a transfer (3 or 5)= my opinion would be to put back 2 on your first try.

Re: IVF question

I'm the same age and unexplained IF. My RE has discussed putting 1, maybe 2 back. She said definitely no more. She was saying how putting more back doesn't increase the chance of pregnancy just the risk of multiples, so I am torn on this too.

I've never heard of such high success rates. I have about a 50/50 shot of it working based on my age and diagnosis and that was considered to be great odds. Did you check your clinics IVF success rates on SART?

Re: IVF question

There are varying factors to consider.

Age
Egg Quality
What your IF issues are.

For me, I was 37 at the time of my first two IVFs. We did a 3dt and put 3 embryos back each time.

My first IVF was a miscarriage, so I don't know how many took.

My 2nd IVF two took, and the RE thought maybe he saw a 3rd sac at that time too. I lost one baby at 7 weeks, and went on to have my DD.

When we went back for DC#2, it was a FET. After doing genetic testing on my remaning 6 frosties, only 2 were viable so those 2 went back. Again, both took, but only one developed.

i am 29 and we transferred 2 perfect grade A 5-day blasts. i was never asked if i wanted to do just one. Dr. recommended two but said no more than two. im glad we went with two because i got pregnant with both but only one grew past the gestational sac and developed - I am almost 20w preg with a singleton.

Thank you!!

the 65% success rate was a number the RE had given me in our consultation. i looked their stats up on the CDC site (is that SART?) and i can see that the percentage of transfers that result in pregnancy is 43% (sorry, read the wrong statistic the first time) so he obviously inflated his numbers.

when i compared my RE's numbers to other places that had a higher rate of pregnancy the difference was def avg number of embryos transferred. it looks like my RE often gambles with one and the other places are more likely to go with 2 and sometimes 3.

a lot of you guys said it depends on the quality of the embies, so i'm just gonna table it for now and cross that bridge when i come to it. i have a feeling i'll be pushing for 2 tho.
