IVF by Choice

Short Intro: We lost our baby on 9/15/08 due to ectopic... it was first diagnosed as a miscarriage, then given metho, then taken into emergency surgery after the tube ruptured. I feel like I lost the baby 3 times. I am scheduled for the dye test in January to see if the other tube is blocked. I have always had extremely irregular periods (anywhere from 6wks to 9mo) and they found traces of endometriosis during the surgery. The embryo did not make it far at all; it was barely in the tube. Dr said that even if the dye test produces a clear tube, there's still a great chance that my last remaining tube doesn't work properly. I still have not ovulated since getting preggo.

SO, DH and I have decided to forgo trying naturally and just try IVF. We feel like we have too much going against us and we don't want to lose another baby, if possible. Has anyone else done this? How do Drs respond when they learn this? Any stories or advice??

Welcome. I hope your stay is short. Chat Icon
I recently had what could've been a chemical or etopic- they're still not sure b/c my beta never got high enough to see anything. In any case I took the methotrexate also- I'm sorry you went/are going thru that. Chat Icon

I think the fact that you have irregular periods AND the fact that you have had an etopic/miscarriage and the fact that you only have 1 tube all = reasons to consider IVF as a next step.
Are you seeing an RE yet? That might be your next step if you aren't seeing one already. Chat Icon This group is made up of a tremendous group of women who are very helpful to one another. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree with the MrsMessina. You're next step should be is to see a RE. You may also suffer from PCOS (polycystic ovaries) if you are not ovulating. IVF has a greater success rate. Don't feel guilty about going this route.

ETA: Did they remove your other tube? If not, you still run a risk of ectopic if it is not removed.

Re: IVF by Choice

I basically did this. I had 4 losses over 3 years in which the last one was the same exact situation as you. Emergency surgery and lost my right tube. I could get pregnant very easily but apparently not in the right place. Whether you ovulate or not is a moot pooint because most clinics will stall your cycle anyway to get everyone on the same cycle. Of course discuss it with your Dr but I don't think it makes much of a difference.

We did IVf and were successful 1st try and I am now 33 weeks with twin boys. We used RMA-Dr Ruman and were very pleased.

Thank you, ladies!! I am so new to this that I wasn't sure if we were headed in the right direction. We are going to the surgeon on Friday for a final check-up (surgery was on 9/15) and I'm hoping he can refer us to a great RE.

We felt so lucky that we got pregnant on our first try, but like you said, it just wasn't in the right area! I'm very particular about doctors (like a lot of women, I need my dr to be fully on my team and with me every step of the way) and after we get our surgeon's suggestions on Friday, we are excited to start talking with different clinics.

Again, I really appreciate any advice and sharing your stories; just when I think I've figured out IVF, I realize that I have so much more to learn :)
