IUI restrictions - UPDATED with another question!!
Hi,
I went for my clomid/IUI info session earlier this month, but am still overwhelmed and wanted to see if any of you could help answer my questions:
When going for IUI, is it normal to do two consecutive inseminations per month? They mentioned doing one per day for two days during peak time.
What are my exercise restrictions? I am a runner, and while I'm not planning on training for a marathon, I am hoping to be able to at least run a few times per week - it's the only thing keeping me sane throughout this whole process!
Are my chances really that much better with IUI compared to natural? I will be doing clomid with it, plus they will give me a trigger shot. I still do not understand the concept of a trigger shot, I'm clueless.
I am going to be 36 in January, so I feel like time is racing on me!!
Thanks for reading and your help!
ANOTHER QUESTION:
ETA: I have another stupid question...I have my annual OB appt for mid-Dec when I'm due to go. Let's just say I am scheduled for the IUI that same day or before that day. Will having a pap smear interfere with "what was done" Sorry, this is a stupid question, but I had to ask.

Re: IUI restrictions - need some help!
It is normal to have back to back inseminations. I have had them - a few times. After my IUIs, I have exercised after asking the doctor if it was ok. I was fine. Ideally it is good to have an IUI just before and just after you ovulate. I got PG that way, but I had an m/c.
A trigger shot will allow them to precisely time your actual ovulation if you have problems ovulating on your own. For me, I never needed one.
As for your chances increasing? I would say they are slightly, but not significantly better. The sperm is washed and since it is deposited directly into the uterus (as opposed to at the base of your cervix with natural conception) it has less distance to travel to get to the egg. But know that the sperm in a washed sample may not live quite as long as an unwashed sample.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply and the info. I m/c back in June - is the risk of m/c higher w/ IUI?

I agree with everything Leslie just said. I also just had back to back IUI's this week but with the trigger.
I do not think that IUI's increase your chance of a m/c.

Re: IUI restrictions - need some help!
I dont think there is a relationship between IUI and miscarriage. IUI is certainly more invasive than natural conception, but still minimally invasive. You may cramp afterwards (I do), but it is not any more or less traumatic to your body as a regular gyno exam.
If it helps, have your DH come and sing to you. Mine sang "Row Row Row Your Boat" except you don't want the boys to swim DOWN the stream, rather UP the stream.

I had a pap smear 2 days before an IUI and it made no difference. A pap smear is on the surface of your cervix and an IUI goes through it. I had my RE do it because I see him more frequently and so I didnt have to go back and forth between two doctors.
You'll be fine! Just take a deep breath. We are here for you!
