IUI-especially after 40?
Hi there, I'm new to this board and to the whole process in general. I am going to the RE on Monday for my 3rd-day appointment. Starting with IUI and will see if/when to move onto IVF.
Just wondering, everything I'm reading says that IUI has a very low success rate in women over 40...even with the Clomid. Does anyone actually ever get pregnant this way? I know a lot of people going through IVF, who IUI didnt work for. I'm wondering why even bother with it if the chances of it working are so slim? I dont want to go directly to IVF; if IUI doesnt work DH and I need to have serious discussions as to whether or not we want to continue with treatments.
thanks

Re: IUI-especially after 40?
Hi, I think you, DH and the RE will be able to make this decision after you meet with them. A lot of things factor in like do you have insurance coverage, is there male factors, are your hormone levels within range, etc. Also, there are other options to Clomid, such as injectible medications, which *should* give you better results (more follicles) if you want to go the IUI route a few times. Best of luck, Shawnna

Re: IUI-especially after 40?
Between 39-40, I got pg 2x on clomid with IUI, so it definitely can work. Unfortunately both pg ended in m/c for me, I believe the one of them could have had something to do with that I had MTHFR and it was undiagnosed. The other one ended at 11w5d - no heartbeat.
Good luck at your RE's and I hope you have success soon!

Re: IUI-especially after 40?
I got pregnant 2x with IUI both ended w/ m/c because I was undiagnosed for 2 different issues..I was 41 and 42 at the time.. So it could happen.. Get tested if you can before you waste precious time.. also I believe our eggs get harder to penetrate after 40 so that could be the reason those stats are true.. IVF w/ICSI is better odds and that is fact.. Good luck

Re: IUI-especially after 40?
I am 41 and have had 4 IUI's. The first two IUI's were natural IUI (no Clomid) and I got pg. The 2nd time nothing. 3rd and 4th IUI with Clomid and nothing. I'm getting discouraged, but the doctor's are positive...so I'm not sure what to believe! I guess everyone is different. I think it can happen honestly (since it did happen with me the first time). Good luck!
