Its enough to make you have a panic attack...

Reading all of these posts on the Occupy Wall Street thread is seriously making me want to Cry or throw up or have a panic attack or, really, all of the above. DH and I are barely above water and we have decided that although its tough DH is going to go back to school to do what he really wants to. I have a job I like now but I don't get paid that well, and because DH is officially "Self-employed" and also had to cash out 401K last year because we owed IRS money, I have more money taken out of my check every 2 weeks in case we owe money at the end of this year. I have health insurance but I work at a small company and the family health insurance is so expensive I would basically be taking home anything afterwards. Mine is the only steady pay check we have. So DH has no insurance.
I am just so anxious about everything. I thank God everyday that we have been able to scrape enough money together every month to make the mortgage but every month gets harder and this month was AWFUL! I am worried that at any point it could all go to Sh!t and I am not sure where we would go then.
Sorry - just wanted to ramble and vent.

Re: Its enough to make you have a panic attack...

If your DH is "self employeed" he might be able to get insurance through the freelancers union or once he starts school through the school or through a professional society.

When I was in Law School I got my insurance through the American Bar Assoc student plan. It was cheaper than goin on a plan by myself or havign DH add me.

Also, if your DH is on a 1099 you should think about payign estimated taxes during the year. I was doing that and that way you are not hit with a HUGE tax liability at the end of the year. When you are on a 1099 it is very hard not to owe something and if you pay quarterly then it won't hurt so much come tax time.

Thanks Allison! While he is self employed and on 1099 he has had very little work this year as a contractor, so I doubt at the end we are going to owe very much. That is why I am having extra money taken out of my checks so that we can make up any loss. I had never heard of the Freelancers Union until your post so I checked it out and unfortunately we do not live in NY so he wont qualify for health insurance but they do over dental. I wonder if MA has something similar that would offer health insurance.

MA requires you to carry health insurance

https://www.mahealthconnector.org/portal/site/connector/

If you go to Individuals it addresses self employed people and gives instructions on it.

My honest advice is to stop reading those posts.

And since you have been reading them you know it's just a matter of time before somebody let's you know that the situation you're in is all your fault anyway so brace for that.Chat Icon Hang in there.

Yea the require it, but from what we looked into the cost of the fine for not having it at the end of the year is less than the monthly payment to have it.
Not to mention that if he is able to get health insurance through my company (if they offer it) he is not eligible for any other more cost effective options. My company does offer family plans but being a small company they were giving an awful health insurance offering. Getting my DH onto the family plan at my job would cost both I and the company I work for a lot of money, and since mine is the only steady paycheck we have right now it is not a smart move to have a good bulk taken out of it. Every month we just pray that DH wont need medical attention. Not the most ideal way to operate, but these are the things that we need to do.

OH I KNOW RIGHT?! But in all reality, that's probably true! Because I decided that I personally couldn't take the corporate world in Boston anymore and the commuting and the culture I needed to give up the job. For my mental healthy and sanity. The result was I was able to find a job 4 minutes from my house. My quality of life (as funny as it sounds from my griping) is much better now. The rub is that I had to take a huge pay cut and now we are scraping by. Of course I did this before the market crumbled and I think now that I wish I hadn't, and if I had to do it again in this economy I would not have.

Nope, he used to be a part of the Carpenters Union but he got out because he kept getting laid off and they never had work.

So he is basically screwed.

ETA: The cost that my company would incur if we decided to go with the family plan was such that they actually agreed to pay for my DH's cobra coverage when he got laid off for as long as he was able to get it. That just ended in June. I am hoping that he can find a part time job with enough hours to qualify for benefits soon.

Thanks he had an interview today with HD. We will see how it goes. There are a lot of people out of work. And he called a warehouse that hire a lot of people going to the school he will be starting so that would be good. There are so many other people he is competing with.

He has been doing some side jobs and that has been keeping us afloat so far, but EVERYONE is dealing with hardships and what people are willing to pay for the work goes down as well. Most people now want to buy the materials themselves and just pay for the labor to put them in, which cuts down on what you can make. My DH is just such a nice guy he has a hard time standing up for himself and his talent. OY VEY!

He has always loved cars and working on them, so he is going to UTI for automotive and diesel mechanics. I am really excited for him, and he is really excited. Its going to be a struggle, but I want him to be happy. Construction was never something he liked to do, it was always something he was good at.
