Its been asked before but...
would you take a $10K cut to be happier in your job?
I may be getting an offer soon which would mean:
- no more commuting into NYC - working for one of my dream organizations
but, its a big cut. I've been looking for almost a year now and I feel like this is a good job, DH is supportive, but at the same time he's also reminding me its a big cut. Granted, he just got the same amount bumped up from last year, so we'd be back to where we were a year ago.
How much does/should money really count?

honestly, imo $10K is not that much of a pay cut-- it seems like a lot, but at the end of the day, on a monthly basis it's not that much difference.
If it's where you want your career to go, I think it's worth it.

well- I don't think that is fair to say- b/c if you are making $50K- I think a $10K pay cut is alot- it's 20%
however- you would be saving money by not commuting to the city- so a $10K paycut - is really only about a $5K pay cut depending on what you spend commuting, $$ lunches in the city etc!

I have taken a pay cut and am so glad I did. If you think about the extra time you'll save from commuting and improved quality of life, I think its worth it.

Re: Its been asked before but...
For my dream job with DH's support - I would go for it.
It would be an adjustment but you will be getting the gift of time back by not commuting to NYC (invaluable) and probably save some money (depending on your train ticket costs vs driving expenses).

10 K before taxes is nothing especially when you factor in commuting costs. I would do it in a heartbeat when you consider the other factors.

Re: Its been asked before but...
Thanks everyone, that's true $10K doesn't come out to that much when factoring eveyrthing in. Now, once I get the official offer I'm nervous it may be bigger than a $10K difference and more like $15K - but I still think with what you all said it makes sense. Its just scary when you're trying to go up every year in your combined income and now b/c of me we're taking a small step back. But quality of life will be better.

Re: Its been asked before but...
Yes and I've taken a $30K cut. That's how miserable I was.
I didn't stay there long, but it was long enough to figure out what I really wanted to do. Now-almost 4 years later I'm many steps ahead and much happier.

I think you should go for it. $10,000 a year really doesnt come out to much, especially considering commuting and everyday expenses ( e.g. lunch in nyc) would be cut out.

Re: Its been asked before but...
I would take a cut only based on the following:
1. I could still live the same lifestyle (of course with adjustments) without it being a hardship
2. My DH was supporting me
3. It was the job I'd dreamed about for forever
4. Knowing I'd never have to come into the city again.
That's just my opinion. If your DH is supporting you and you are going to be ok financially, and this is your dream job................i say GO FOR IT!

Re: Its been asked before but...
For me it would be worth it not to have to commute. I am making less than I made when I worked in the city - not $10k less, but still less - and I am a lot happier not having to commute anymore.

Re: Its been asked before but...
When you think about it $10K gross is really only like $5K net, spread along 52 weeks which is only like $96.00. Plus you must consider what you will be saving: not having to pay NYC employment tax will be a big help to your weekly paycheck, plus your train, plus your metrocard.
It's a no brainer. Go for it!!!!! I am so happy for you
