it was so beautiful this weekend-anyone do any projects?

Saturday I went to work with DH & we did some outside work on a beautiful waterfront home in East Hampton, the weather was great & the view amazing but I would have rather been working on my own house.
Then we went to home depot to get the stuff we needed for our projects.
we rototilled our entire property a few weeks ago when it was really nice out, then the weather got crappy again. So yesterday we started raking it out, we are going to re-seed to get a new lawn going. We moved a few sprinkler heads to new spots, put up a new fence for the chickens & decided on the spot that we will rebuild our fire-pit. We also moved my raised vegetable beds & planned out the size of the new one we will build. DH collects leftover lumber & all kinds of other stuff from his jobs so every spring we inventory to see what we can build, its like christmasChat Icon

Anyone else do any projects this weekend?

We are in the process of re-doing out bathroom, so on Sat we took out the vanity and sink and the sheet rock onthe wall. On Sunday, our plumber came in and moved the plumbing to where it needs to be for our new vanity. We are now going to have the electrician come in and rewire everthing for the new light fixtures. Once that is done, my Dh and I will replace the sheetrock, tape and spackle then prime and paint! Chat Icon

here are some pictures so far!

Kelly WOW you got a lot done! Do you own your own rototiller? I was curious about them, for when we move into a new place.

Since we probably can't afford new plants the first year anyway, I was thinking of digging it up, amending the soil, putting seed down, and letting it rest for a year. It all depends on what we get and how big it is, of course.

Do you and your husband ever have extra materials and have a yard sale? Chat Icon

Lisa, good luck with the rebuild! Your bathroom looks so much bigger without the sink in it!

I had an area around my hose that was a catch-all for extra dirt, supplies, garbage can, pots. I raked it out, leveled the soil, put a lot of garbage out to the curb.

I also cleaned out my two lily beds, put some fresh mulch down. The leaves are already sprouting from all of them!

Every part of my body is sore. I have scratches and bruises all over me, even the palms of my hands are sore. But how nice it was to get out there, the first gardening of the season! Chat Icon

Re: it was so beautiful this weekend-anyone do any projects?

I posted earlier, but its all in one place now

I raked all the dead grass from the lawn, and my shoulders got a great workout

Then DH & I cut some very overgrown fir like trees - they were far too low to the ground for the spot they are in and were blocking the sidewalk.

Then DH completely weeded one flower bed and we Preened - OMG it looks so good

I am planning to do the other bed next weekend and then plant on Good Friday

Our neighbours out biking and walking all stopped to comment and admire the yardwork we did and the siding job we had done over the winter...that made it all worthwhile

Now I need to figure out what to plant in these beds - they are along the outside of the property, but inside a wal. Last year I had marigolds and they did well - I am thinking of marigolds and begonias this year - its full sun for most of the day and we don't water the lawn every day - so I need full sun and drought tolerant - does it exist?

Have you ever tried Canna Lilies? I have full sun, sandy soil, windy conditions. I've grown daisies, certain kinds of coleus, ornamental grass, and Canna lilies successfully.

I did all mine in pots so I was watering every day. But if they were in the ground, maybe with some good compost, it probably wouldn't require daily watering. Especially if you mulch them.

I would love love to do calla lillies, but I haven't seen them in any nurseries near me (Dees in Oceanside and Atlantic in Freeport)

You live by me, I used to shop at Atlantic too. I frequent Dee's more now though.

Canna and Calla are two different kinds. Callas don't last long, but are beautiful. Cannas are the ones with the huge beautiful leaves and tall stalks.

You should get the tubers and plant them in about a month. You'll have leaves by May and flowers by June. They make a great screen too, and at the end of the season, you just hack them off at the base. Chat Icon

Check this pic out, these things can get huge! There are mini varieties though also:

I bought calla lilly bulbs from QVC, the only thing is that they have to be planted in pots because they can not reach temps below 30 degrees in the winter.

Looks like we have a lot of south shore people. Chat Icon I have bought Canna lilies from Dees before. They've been good about checking stock for me over the phone too. You just never know this time of year, how much they're carrying.

I know for a fact Atlantic will be carrying them. They have the boxes of tubers early on and later, they combine full grown ones in pots with other plants. In that big greenhouse right behind the main building.

DH installed a new screan door. We didn't have one before.

I decorated the house for Easter.
