Is this strange?

The hospital we want to have the baby in gives tours of the L&D area and rooms, but you have to call an hour before you want to come and "if" they have something available you can come. The other option is to sign up for a childbirthing class that costs $200 and includes a tour. Seeing as how this is not my first child..it makes no sense to take this class..when they really don't do anything and all I really want is the tour. I'm just finding it hard to believe that they say "if" they have a room available you can see it. What if they don't???

To charge for a tour would be crazy!! With my hospital, they do offer Lamaze classes for $125, and that includes a tour of the hospital too...but my sister is teaching us Lamaze, so we didn't need that. But I called the hospital and they offer FREE tours, only one night a month. We just went on Tuesday. They did mention that we were lucky, that several of the rooms were empty so we'd get to see them, since obviously if someone's in labor or delivering, they don't show their room (and I don't want to see it!! )

Who did you speak to, was it a nurse or someone in charge of classes, etc? I would try to call back and get someone else, this just doesn't seem possible. My hospital is a small, private hospital too, and they only do the tours once a month (besides for the ones that are part of the Lamaze classes), but they still get you there at a set date/time to tour. If all the rooms are being used, they just walk you around still and explain things...

Actually it does make sense...based on what I understand. The hospital has so many rooms and all get used when needed. They probably ask you to call in advance to save you a trip in case all of the rooms are in use.

I am sure no one would want stangers coming in to see a room while they were in there either in labor in or in the beginning stages.

This way - you call and if they have open rooms then they know they can have you check it out without wasting your time or interupting a patient.


ETA: Definitely do not sign up for the class - you could end up paying and still not see a room if one isn't available. That's not fair at all to you!

Why is it strange? Would you want to see a room with a stranger laboring in it? Would she want you in there? I think they mean, you can see the room as long as its not being used by a women in labor?

I completely understand that..but at the same time, I'd like to be able to see the "area" I'm going to be in as well. If they never have rooms..then how will I see? How can someone choose a hospital like that? I was fortunate enough to know friends who have given birth their, but I'd like to see for myself what happens..etc. I just found it really odd that the lady would say if we don't have rooms you can't see it almost as if she was saying ...too bad.

I would think she meant "at that time"...and to call back. Maybe Im missing something...LOL...

Most hospitals will have at least one time where theres an empty room and just like the rest of us at our hospitals, you have to find that time, or else , what can ya do?

Yeah that's what I thought too..but she made it clear that if there weren't any..I wouldn't get a tour. Mind you..if I sign up for a childbirth class (which I don't want) a tour is included

For the tour we went on 2 days ago (again, not part of Lamaze, just a tour with other couples who had signed up), they discussed hospital procedures with you in a room first, then walked you around the whole maternity floor, and made a point of saying we were lucky that some of the rooms were empty so we could see them. But they still give the tours as scheuled if all rooms are full, they still walk you around the unit, give you the info talk part, let you look at the nursery, etc. In my case, I guess if all the rooms were full, you don't get to see them (again, I don't want to watch someone else anyway! ), but if it was of big importance to me, I could maybe schedule another tour (although they're only once a month, I would probably miss the June one). My hospital's set-up for the tour made sense to me, and it was good to go, and informative.

Ok let me give this woman the benefit of the doubt (as much as I don't want to)..

I by no means want to see a room with someone in it. That would be really rude! For the most part I've seen the unprivate rooms because my friends have given birth their. I want a private one..but I don't care about seeing it. What I do want is the "info tour"...but this woman made it seem like that wasn't going to happen either.

Ok..I'm going to call again. Please that I don't get her AGAIN!
