Is this normal when you stop pumping/bfing?
My breasts are hard as rocks (with HUGE lumps in them) and they hurt pretty badly. I've been pumping just to relieve the pain (5 minutes), but they start to hurt again 4-5 hours later.
I've been putting ice packs on them, taking sudafed and not letting warm water hit it in the shower.
TIA!

Did you stop cold turkey? How often were you pumping/BFing before that? You should really try to go longer between BFing/pumping sessions and then gradually drop one session at a time. That will help prevent clogged ducts and mastitis.

ITA.
I would also pump less than 5 minutes and I wouldn't do it consistently (otherwise you're telling your body to produce more milk).
I stopped after a year of BFing so it was a little different, but I went down to 4 feedings, then cut out 2.... waited about a week and cut out 1 more... waited and then cut the last one. The adjustment period was a little rough after the final session was over, but I pumped a tiny bit to relieve the pressure and didn't wear anything tight or binding (kellymom doens't recommend doing so)

I had to stop almost cold turkey. I should have cut down slowly, but I wanted to feed DS as long as possible before going back to work (and am out a 12 hour day... and really can not pump at work).
It sounds weird, but I'd squeeze out the milk when taking a bath. My supply totally stopped & breasts went back to normal in less than 1 week.

Re: Is this normal when you stop pumping/bfing?
I had to stop quick and this worked for me........Cold cabbage leaves in the breast and only hand expelling about 1oz total. Just enough to relieve some pressure. It WILL be uncomfortable for about a week, but I swear on everything those cabbage leaves WORK! It stinks and is weird but the cool leaves feel great and ease the swelling. Also try some Motrin. The key is not to really pump. Just enough to relieve some pressure but not enough to get you to keep producing. I would do it in the wornings and maybe once in the late afternoon. I also put cool packs on my chest while at home and when DD cried my husband fed her for a few days. It does get better. Oh and I just used 1 leaf per breast. It looks small but when you peal it off it's freakin HUGE. Those bad boys covered my G's PERFECT!
