is this messed up or not?

so all summer my DD2 (14 m) has had a diaper rash. it started out mild, and when i showed my ped in july she attributed it to teething and the acidic poop that teething creates. said to use the desitin, which i did. fast forward to august, and the rash is still around and now bleeding and causing her pain. i went to the ped who said it was fungal and gave me a prescription cream. said it would definitely work. after a week, rash was no better. so i called the ped back and told them. nurse said she would speak to the doctor and when the nurse called me back, she said the ped said to see a dermatologist and gave me a few names to see. i was a little put off by the fact that she didn't even want to see my kid again, but i didn't say anything and went to the dermatologist. she gave us a cream last week that has had no effect on this horrific rash. so this morning i called the ped and explained the situation, and the receptionist said that since they referred me to the dermatologist, thats who i would have to call with this matter. i get that, but i really feel like my ped should know whats going on and maybe see my kid again. i am so upset about this fungal rash that is not responding to anything, and seeing my baby cry in pain with every diaper change. she also poops like 4 times a day, which i feel is contributing to the rash, but when i told the ped that on the first visit she didn't seem concerned. i dunno. normally my ped is very caring, but to me this feels like a brush off. am i overreacting? i didn't say anything to the receptionist but i feel very irritated.

thanks for reading.

Awwww, your poor baby!! What prescription cream did they give her? There are two creams that we have been prescribed - Nystatin & Chlotrimozole. The Nystatin never works for DD, but the Chlotrimozole always works.

And yes, I feel like it is messed up that they won't even see her about it. I don't think her PED should've sent you guys to a derm. in the first place. but what do I know Chat Icon

We actually changed PED's because my DD had a teary eye problem for a while when she was younger, and when we mentioned I to her PED, she didn't even look at her eye, she just gave us the # of a eye doc. Totally turned us off.

is this messed up or not?

I had this for my dd. it took forever to go away. Months.
Switched to an organic diaper and kept her bare when at home.
No wipes.
When it was just pee we wouldn't wipe.
We used the prescription cream along with a mixed paste of mylanta, balmex, and cortisone.
Also had to give her oral diflucan.
It SUCKED.

The pediatrician is defiantly wrong. He is the main go to person for all your kids medical needs. The attitude when you called back is ridiculous. I would be looking for a new pediatrician.

Your poor baby - did you call dermatologist back - maybe something baby is having is causing the acidic poops for the rash.

It's actually excellent care.

Your ped saw the rash (can't always tell by seeing a rash what is causing it), did basic treatment, more advanced treatment & since your kid wasn't getting better, figured to send the kid to a rash expert: the derm.

All peds will have basic training of identifying rashes, but since the scope of their knowledge is beyond skin, they will have limitations. Meds are also changing frequently.

It's good care to send a child to someone more expert & realize your limitations (and she saved you a visit when she wouldn't have been sure of the next step).

My 2 dd's were always prone to yeast rashes. My ped gave us a couple of hints and they worked pretty well
-always use powder at diaper changes. Yeast loves warm wet areas. Powder helps to soak up the mositure.
-some kids just produce more yeast. we agve her more yogurt and a dose of kids probiotics regularly.
- Triple paste every night (over night) and as soon as I suspected a rash coming on. When they had them and was on the prescribiton cream - I would also use triple paste and powder throughout the day

good luck!

Have you switched diaper brands lately? Some kids can be allergic to certain brands.

I agree. I think at the point the diaper rash is at I would want to see someone who deals with just skin issues.

I think the PEd did the right thing by sending you to a speicalist

I agree. Its the idea of too many chefs in the kitchen, they pointed you to a pro when they couldn't resolve it. I think that's better than wasting your time with another visit to just say you should call so and so. Then when the Derm try didn't work they can't really speak to it, as the derm is a pro in that field and has much more experience and works differently than the doc.

AJ sees a derm. I just tell my doc, yep she's still seeing a derm but it never cleared up like they said it would but its now controllable (eczema).

Just like I don't get my GP about my derm visits, my ENT, Neuro, Gastro, or other specialist visits, unless its relative to my general health, but I keep them posted at well visits. That's how I got my GP to write me the script that I would have to go to a Derm for. :)

But that rash sounds horrible and I'm sure its heavy on your mind. You don't care who does what you just want her pain to stop and to stop NOW. Not wait a week or go through trials... fix it and fix it now. That feeling I am familiar with!

Re: is this messed up or not?

Doesn't fix the doctor issue but this is why I had to switch to cloth diapers. My dd would get an awful rash from disposables. I switched to prefolds with a cover and she never had a rash again. I was given creams and oitments. Then told by my ped to stop using wipes and just use soft paper towels with warm water and to try switching diaper brands. But nothing worked so we had to stitch to cloth.

I understand you are upset at the dr and it was off putting but the derm is the skin expert. Are you still using wipes? Stop of you are and switch to either cvs dry clothes and water or paper towel and water. When dd had a nasty yeast rash we were told to put a layer of the prescription cream and a layer of triple paste every other diaper change. Every diaper change use the triple paste. Do not wipe pee only poop and only use soap every other day and not down there at bath time. Also make sure whatever you are using isn't petroleum based we were told it aggrevates rashes. Good luck bad diaper rash is a nightmare.

What type of diapers are you using? For us Huggies are a no.

Also if Lo allows it try blow drying down there after a bath to make sure its really dry. Powder only aggrevates my Lo so we don't touch it.

I wouldn't be bothered by the ped referring you to a specialist. If the ped couldn't help, then I would prefer they send me to a specialist who can actually help.

My dd kept getting bad rashes. Dr would rx cream and it would get better but always come back, especially after an ab.

I switched to water wipes. I get them on amazon. Also I only use earth momma angel baby balm on her. It smells amazing and has no chemicals. Use ewg.com and see what your diaper cream rates. I would keep her naked as much as possible and also introduce a probiotic. I would empty the pill into a splash of juice and syringe it and dd sucks it down. That could help regulate her.

my ped said the same thing. Both of my twins had rashes on and off from 13-15 months. then one day it just went away. i had tried mostly just balmex and nystatin, as well as changing 100 different diapers and wipes. my ped was just like oh its just a rash, it will go away eventually.
