Is this a stupid idea?
I don't think so, but everyone else seems to.
We are planning to put down hardwood floors in our house next spring, maybe earlier. It's mostly carpeted now. However, the "foyer" or entrance, is ceramic tile. I hate tile, except for bathrooms (sorry, lol) and would much rather extend the wood into this 'room' as well.
Everyone is telling me to leave the tile, so that the foyer is more like a mudroom...so that people can come in with wet, muddy shoes and we can just wipe it up. Will wood floors in an entryway get ruined? I plan to put down a runner, or mat that can be tossed in the washing machine if need be.

i'm not a big fan on tile unless it is in the kitchen or bathroom that has a bath. i have all hardwood throughout and my half bath is also hardwood floors and it is soooo beauitful and everyone says so. i wouldn not do that to a bathroom that has a bath though. anyhow, i would go with all hardwood even in the foyer and have a rug down. that's what i have. i think if you have tile and hardwood how would it look where these two meet? that would mybiggest thing.

A friend of mine just did the same thing. When you walked into her house it had ceramic flooring in the "foyer", hallway leading into the dining room, kitchen and living room. They just pulled up all the tile and put down the same wood floor that was in all the other rooms. And it looks very nice.

We have wood floors in our entryway and have never had a problem. I also have a runner. We love it and get tons of compliments.

Re: Is this a stupid idea?
I would say it depends on the layout. If the foyer is a separate area then the tile would be my preference, or replace it with slate, but I wouldn't personally care for the look of a tile apron by the door, surrounded by wood.
We do have all wood by our door, and it's the only entrance to the house that has key access from the outside. It's a PITA in the winter, when your boot are all snowy. And we don't have little ones, it's just DH and me. Even so, I am always wiping up snow bits and wet spots in the winter, despite having a runner.
I wish we had a more practical entrance area instead of walking right in onto a wood floor.

Re: Is this a stupid idea?
I don't think it is a bad idea. We have hard wood floors from the minute you walk in the door. We only have carpet in 2 bedrooms and the great room. I just put a mat down as you walk in to wipe you feet.

We have wood floors in our entry way and it's fine. You definately do need a runner though.
