Is this a reasonable quote (newborn photography)

This person will come to my home when Kevin is 7-10 days old for $150 which includes

60 minutes of her time

editing and "fixing" the pics to ensure optimal quality

a disk with 30-40 pictures that I may share, print and use for birth announcements

Thoughts?

TIA

Sounds good to me. I have never had someone come here but #1 I have spent that at BRU for picturesChat Icon and #2 I went to the studio that did my wedding and they charged no sitting fee but spent about $70 for a handful of pictures, no cd.

Re: Is this a reasonable quote (newborn photography)

Seems good to me in terms of price but some things to consider.

Newborns don't always go to sleep or wake up on a photographers schedule. So would you be willing to ante up for another hour if the baby needs to be fed, changed, outfit change (or naked, which makes for better shots IMO). Some photographers spend hours at these shoots soothing the baby.

The cd of photos - are they high resolution photos? If not, the only thing they'll be good for is emailing, posting. Print quality will be poor.

Editing can take hours and often times people don't consider it when they book a photographer. They think a photo magically comes out like that. The skin is often softened, eyes sharpened. A simple B&W conversion isn't simple. You get someone who thinks they know photoshop well and does it by desaturating which essentially makes a baby look lifeless and dead. I see it all of the time. For some reason crappy photoshopping being passed off for photography pisses me off. Anyone can take a good picture, kick up the saturation (increases color) or run an action on a photo and call themselves a photographer these days.

Does this photographer have credentials other than being good with a camera? I consider myself good with a camera but that doesn't qualify me to charge $150 an hour.

So while it's a good price, you do get what you pay for. I have a ton of websites from photographers all over the country. If you want an opinion on what you are being charged, feel free to send me the info/website. As you may have gathered, it's something I'm pretty passionate about and while I've taken courses and did the DebG thing on here, I am not a photographer, I really feel there is a bar for photography that is really lacking in the days of DSLRs. The last thing I'd want is for someone to be unhappy with newborn shots because those wrinkly few days aren't something you can get back.

(Stepping off soap box now - sorry for the diatribe).

The price is not bad but you definatley need more that an hour for a newborn shoot. Mine took 4 hours. My DS decided to poop 3 times during the shoot & needed to be changed and he also had to be fed in the middle of it. IMHO 1 Hour is not enough time.

Re: Is this a reasonable quote (newborn photography)

That is definitely a good price BUT an hour????? Newborn shoots usually run 3-4 hours. The shortest newborn session I've ever done was 2.5 hours.

Keep in mind that just feeding the baby takes time and then if the baby gets fussy or needs a diaper change - well, there is an hour right there.

Honestly, Barb really nailed it on the head. It just seems that anyone with a camera these days, especially now with digital, can take a photo and claim they are a photographer. I see it on the web all the time.

What you need to find is someone who truly understands what working with a newborn is like, understands that the session is going to be more than an hour. Someone who is going to make your life easier and will bring everything for the session to your home.

I would definitely shop around. You may end up paying more *but* you'll get what you were looking for. Call some people, speak with them and get a feel for them. You should be comfortable with the photographer - they are going to be in your home with your child.

I really do wish I lived closer Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think that's a great price, but the time period seems really off to me.
