Is there such thing as a low profile mattress?
I know they have low profile box springs but do they have it in mattresses too? I'm getting my boys bunk beds but I don't want the top mattress to be too high - I'd rather there was as much guardrail height as possible. But I don't want one of those thin foam mattresses either.

Yes, they are either called bunk mattresses or low profile mattresses
