is there a thread

like Hayleys on the TTC board that explains the ins and outs from the beginning of IVF? Like now that we have been trying for more than 5 months, if I go to an RE what do they do from start to finish? IThe terminology that I see on this board is all new to me so I dont know what it all means. TIA ladies!!!!

This is from my RE:

When to see a Fertility Specialist:

* If you are under 35 years of age and have been trying to conceive for over 1 year.
* If you are between the ages of 35 - 39, seek treatment after 6 months.
* Over 40 years of age, after 3 months of trying to conceive.
* If you have more than 2 pregnancy losses (Recurring Pregnancy Loss)

You'll start with an RE consult... (I have a whole explanation of mine in my blog) and they will want complete histories from you and DH. The first thing is probably an SA. They'll also want to do bloodwork (CD 3 at least). Next they might want to do an HSG. After you get the results of all of that testing, you'll go from there. (Some doctors also do a post-coital).

In terms of treatment options...

There's low-tech and high-tech.

Low tech:

-Minimally Invasive Surgeries like laproscopy or hysteroscopy
-Ovulation Induction (Clomid, Femara, injectables, etc)
-IUI (intrauterine insemination)

High tech:

-IVF, In Vitro Fertilization (which has it's own whole set of acronyms)

There's also "third party" options:

-Surrogacy
-Egg/Sperm donation

No, there is no thread like that. But don't assume that going to an RE means IVF. There are many other treatments available, depending on your situation. Usually, it starts with a long medical/family history for both of you. Then some basic tests, like CD 3 b/w, maybe an ultrasound of the ovaries/uterus, DH will need a semen analysis then the more invasive tests like an HSG or water sono. Once you have a diagnosis then you can decide on the course of treatment you'd like to take such as IUI cycles, medications or IVF.

thank you shawnna also!!! about insrance, so if i make an appt after 6 months of trying, they wont cover it to go to re? how do they know how long you have been trying?

thank you shawnna also!!! about insrance, so if i make an appt after 6 months of trying, they wont cover it to go to re? how do they know how long you have been trying?

That is only the case if you need a referral from your doc, and the doc won't give you a referral unless it's been a year (for healthy people)

Since you had endo- you shouldn't have a problem getting in with an RE.

When I called to make an appt w/ an RE, I didn't need to give a reason for the appt (other then, "TTC w/ no luck). If Dr. Hanover is your regular dr who you have a history/ good relationship w/ u may want to wait until you speak w/ him or her and get their opinion. I personally don't like to wait so I just made an appt. I'm glad I did bc I feel like I am moving forward a lot more quickly.

To be honest, I'm not sure about exactly which test is which.

I know CD 20 bloodwork checks to see if you've ovulated. The HSG is a procedure to see if your tubes are open (lots of threads and posts about this procedure!!!). There's a lot to learn and figure out. It's definitely overwhelming at first!

A good book that people recommended to me was The Baby Solution..it is by Dr Kenigsburg who also works at LI IVF. The book really explains so much. I found it helpful. Got it on Amazon
