Is my toddler testing me? WWYD?
DS is killing me during diaper changes. He literally kicks me, grabs my arm so hard or sits up to head butt me.
I am literally bruised all over. I have little finger bruises on my arm and my left breast is killing me where he typically kicks. I am in a lot of pain.
We have given him special toys and my cell phone to keep his attention. But even with these toys he still does it. We've tried weeks with no toys, still happens.
Am I feeding him with my screams? Do I just ignore it? I am literally ready to just have him walk around naked. I haven't hurt this much in a long time.
WWYD? I wish I could strap his legs down.
TIA!

Re: Is my toddler testing me? WWYD?
I wish I had advice...mine pitches a fit during each diaper change too.
She says "No wipes" as if trying to plead her case. Then flips if we use wipes (same wipes we've used for almost 2 years, so nothing is new & bothering her )
Then we try to tell her that if she goes on the potty we won't have to use wipes anymore...but that doesn't drive her enough to want to potty-train.
Mine isn't physical like Michael, but I still feel your pain.

ok maybe try getting one of those training toilets and see if maybe he wants to try it. make a game out of it. sing pee pee on the potty song. I hope that maybe he is ready for it. for your sake

We've tried this technique too. DOesn't work for us either.

Declan is like this and is as strong as a grown man sometimes! He will arch his back and almost flip upside down to get away from me. I have started giving him his bottle while getting him changed if I can. If not-I strap him to the changing table

I've definately got to make it more fun. He's been sitting on the potty for about 6 months. But he always gets up after about 2 minutes. He announces he is 'done' even though he hasn't done anything.
I think he gerts it from us being done fast, so he figures 2 minutes is the threshold.

Yea. The bottle worked when he was younger. But now he's on straw cups and they don't work upside down.
He does get strapped in most of thetime, but there aren't straps for legs.

Do you still use a changing table?
Ryan is 16 months and if he isn't on the changing table, changing his diaper is practically impossible. On the floor or couch he is able to maneuver himself much better.
On the changing table, not so much. He does kick sometimes which is painful but somehow I have managed to muddle through it.
When he gets just a little stronger I am going to be in for it big time.

I get kicked, pinched and scratched too.
I still use the changing table. He is probably too big for it and definitely too tall for it, but during the times I have changed him on the floor, he has literally rolled over and stood up during the diaper change.
What seems to work for me is singing. We sing itsy bitsy spider, wheels on the bus, songs that he knows that keep him interested. Sometimes I still get the kicks, but he is less ornery.

Maybe try and switch to pull ups. Change him while he's standing up. Sometimes, Bry will try and run, but, I'm firm with him. If its a stinky diaper, I lay him down most of the time and keep offering him toys. He has this mini etcha sketch thingy and I tell him to draw me a picture.

I use the mean mommy voice and the stare down. It works most of the time but sometiems she just leans up and gives kisses and the moment passes. Its a phase they are going through and we are along for the ride.

I was going to say too...maybe for just wet diapers to try and change him while he's standing up. Kaydyn gives us a hard time changing her sometimes too. She kicks, hits, rolls over, sits up. She loves music so I now turn her radio on before changing her (I actually let her turn it on) and then we sing throughout the diaper change. Sometimes it works...sometimes it doesn't.

Yes we still use it. I have to because of my physical problems.

Hasn't worked with either of those. That's why I'm wondering if he enjoys me bringing attention to it and if I should try ignoring.

That's when you change them on the floor & pin them down.
You can try complimenting him when he's behaving. Really push the compliments when he behaves & ignore the bad behavior (I know this is easier said than done). I've experienced firsthand that when they're looking for attention, they'll take yelling.

That's what I do.
I make sure I have everything ready to go, wipes pulled out, diaper opened up, diaper cream with the cap off and squeezed to the top.
Then I chase him down, and sit on him with my legs holding his arms down so I can grab his legs with one hand and change his diaper as fast as I can with the other.
It's definitely exhausting and I've gotten my share of bruises but for my DS, the fighting of the diaper changes comes and goes in stages.

Changing him on the floor just isn't an option in my condition. I've done it here or there, but I still can't get in that position well. My last leg surgery is in January, so hopefully I can do better by then.
