Re: Is it a must?

There are a few reasons they might put you on BC.

I was on it to "regulate" my cycle since I don't O and get my period on my own. It was either that, or going on Provera and I did not want the Provera.

The other reason is so THEY can adjust your cycle to fit their IVF cycle schedule.

Re: Is it a must?

I've had one IVF cycle and my periods are very regular, and was not put on BCPs. I've never taken them before in my life and my doc didn't want to introduce them to me for the first time right before IVF.

Re: Is it a must?

For my 1st IVF cycle I was put on BCP
( had a chemical pg)

The 2nd cycle Dr. changed up my meds and put me on Lupron instead and thats when I conceived my DD...

Unless I am confused, I was under the impression that he gave me the BCP (and Lupron) to supress my ovaries Chat Icon

Also, when doing the IVF cycle I thought I recall being told not to have unprotected sex, unless that was only after transfer ??

no sex at all after transfer.

BCPs supress your ovaries so they can be stimmed.

Re: Is it a must?

I've heard and read about them putting you on BCP to fit THEIR schedule, but what does that mean....how is it that different than the IUI schedule? Sorry I'm confused.

Yes, BCP suppresses your ovaries. Very early on in your cycle, you have pre dispoisitioned dominant follicles, they want to have a clean slate so your body produces MANY follies with medication. I want in on day 5 this cycle and it was already too late to start meds, Dr. B said my body was already going to do what it wanted. Good luck to you !!!!!

Re: Is it a must?

Then what is the difference between using BCP and Lupron for the cycle?

Re: Is it a must?

I think it was a good idea.

I had a medicated cycle in which a dominant follicle had started to form (they can't see it on early US). It was a total waste of time and money (I had only 1 follie despite injection meds).

I did both BCP and then Lupron for my IVF cycle. (which worked)

I hadn't taken BCP except for the time right before my wedding. I'm not a fan of any type of meds in my system... but that doesn't work for IF.

Honestly, if you are still waiting for something to happen naturally, take some time off before IVF (or delay the start). After my 2 years of trying HARD with no result... I was pretty sure nothing would happen naturally.

ALSO: I needed to time my IVF around work. I was able to do it exactly.

Here's a nice website link that I think explains it pretty well:

Re: Is it a must?

I didn't use BCPs. I used Lupron.
