Is Home Schooling common here?
Not sure if home schooling is common here in NY but it's very common in California.

Not nearly as common as other parts of the country.
This may have to do with our very high school taxes- people feel they might as well get their $$ worth. I also think the state isn't as supportive of parents doing it as in other regions.
I did attend a conference which said it's on the rise.

I wouldn't think so. Maybe more prevalent in upstate NY areas. My aunt Homeschooled her two kids. She lives in Alaska though, and at the time, the nearest school was more than 25 miles away.

No, not very common. I worked in college admissions here in NY and we only received a handful of home schooled student applications a year.

Actually, there are some communities on Long Island that do have a large home school population. One of my private students was home schooled until she was in eighth grade, but they were classes. One day they'd go to one person's house, where the parent was certified in math, then another day go to someone else's house where the parent was certified in soemthing else, etc. Her mom was certified in Spanish and taught that. They even had an orchestra!
