Is anyone's dr. hesitant to prescribe Zofran?

My Dr. said that unless I was vomiting blood, my morning sickness is normal. Anyone else encounter such an experience?

Normal? Yes. Compatible with a good quality of life? No! Can you eat? Keep food down. Eat healthfully? If the answer is no then he should be helping you. I posted something earlier about how legumes help nausea..not sure if that will help you at all.

well, as we know it is normal, but it sure is difficult to get nutrients to baby if it all keeps coming back up Chat Icon

My attitude towards medication is this:
I don't want any during my pregnancy... All medications have risk as far as pregnancy is involved... some have less than others, but ALL have a degree of risk.
So, I'll try to tough out what ever is thrown at me... Note the word 'try' in there... If I was turning green and was unable to keep anything down, it likely would be better for baby to take the zofran just so you can get proper nutrition. (heck, if it's bad enough, your prenatal vitamins won't even be absorbed...)

I had no morning sickness... but I've noticed that my OB oddly avoided doing certain tests that a lot of moms on this board are given routinely.... I think your Zofran experience with your Dr. may be a similar thing. S/He is just overly cautious about this medication...

If I were you and experiencing bad m/s, I'd press the issue with my OB.....

My OB said the same thing. I wasn't throwing up, but the MS was really interupting my ablity to work and function daily. I tried everything else they told me to do (eat bagels, try ginger snaps, avoid acidic drinks like OJ) but nothing worked. So, I called them back and basically demanded the Zofran. They, heistantly, gave it to me. I ended up only needed to take 2 of them before my MS went away.

My dr. had no problem prescribing it to me. She was the one who offered it to me because my sickeness was affecting my job and I was miserable and zofran really did help me :)

My doctor had no problem giving it to me either. In fact, he was the one to suggest it. I was really nauseaus and it was hard caring for my one year old all day.

Re: Is anyone's dr. hesitant to prescribe Zofran?

Thanks for your replies. Since Saturday I have only been able to keep a minimal amount of food down (a waffle or bialy a day). My head is splitting, because I think I am dehydrated. I haven't had my vitamin since Sunday. I called the Dr. yesterday, he called me back, I now called him back. I hope he can give me some relief.Chat Icon

OHHHHHH that would p*** me off!!!!!! Zofran is completely and totally safe for pregnancy. I know they want you to take as little medication as possible, but...without Zofran, I wouldn't be able to get through the day (I'm a teacher, and I think you said you are too, right?). You need to insist on that prescription. All I needed to tell my Dr. was that I'm a teacher, and I can't afford to be running back and forth to the bathroom all day.

Hope you start to feel better--I know what you're going through. Chat Icon

Thank you--yes, I am a teacher. I took today off because I was so violently ill this morning. I feel a little bit better now. I had some cheese and crackers and water. Ugh.

I actually turned it down. After reading up on Zofran and Reglan (the two that were offered to me) I don't want them right now. I am going to re-evaluate if this continues after 16 weeks.
I am able to keep food down though so I think that is what your doctor needs to consider. Getting dehydrated isn't good for you or the baby. Good Luck!
