Is anyone else not baptizing their child?

DH was raised Catholic and I was raised Lutheran (but baptized Catholic). I believe in God and plan to teach DS about God, but I have issues with organized religions and so we don't plan to baptize DS. DH's family is VERY upset about this and has given us (well mostly my poor DH) tons of grief about it. Not to mention the unsolicited comments of people who are practically strangers when they hear that we are not planning to baptize. Is anyone else in this situation? How did you handle the family conflict? I thought after a while they would accept it, but it's still a huge issue. They are so upset and I feel bad that they are so upset over it, but it is just not for us and we have to make our own decisions about how we will raise our children. I'm thinking of possibly going to a unitarian church and mabye having a dedication ceremony. Does anyone belong to a unitarian church? I think that is more in line with my beliefs. TIA!

We are not. DH is an atheist and while I believe in God, higher power, whatever I do not consider myself religious at all and have no plans of attending church so I don't see the point of baptizing our child if we won't practice religion ourselves. I expected some grief about this but surprisingly we haven't gotten any.
I'm sorry you have to deal with this. Just remember you are the parents and it's your decision to make. No one else's.
I'm 31 years old and was never baptized. My mom wanted me to decide for myself and I was so disgusted with organized religion I decided to never do it.

My borther ans SIL are in the same boat as you, my SIL doesn't want to do anything, my brother, I think, just wants a party for her. So I suggested they do a welcoming party. But as far as religion goes, it's a touchy subject with them, both are not religious at all.

We are not. DH was raised Muslim, but now doesn't practice. I think we will end up raising the children as Christians, since it seems his family won't speak to us even though I finally agreed to convert.

this is something we have been struggling with as well.

We were both raised catholics but more and more, we have become very against the institution itself so I'm not sure what we will do.

I am catholic (not practicing) and DH is Jewish (not practicing) so we didnt do anything for Jacob as far as baptizing or bris. I dont get grief from any family mainly b/c they prob know better. (as far as my family goes) DH's family agrees with me on not doing either since the baby will never prob set foot in a church or a temple unless he feels the need to. We both believe in God and will teach him about it, but other than that, it is up to him later on if he wants to choose a religion. I actually get more grief from strangers when the conversation comes up. Amazingly, strangers feel the need to push their beliefs/regligion on me and my child, and remind me of how important a religious foundation is.Chat Icon In all honesty, I went to church as a kid (until my mother passed when i was 8) and I hated every minute of it. Hated going to religion classes after school too. What i learned there never sank in. Just the basics that my Mom taught me did. And for me, I'm just not going to make my son go thru that. JMO!
