I'm thinking about taking a lesson or two on vacation.
Any surfing for dummies advice?

I took a surfing lesson two summers ago in Hawaii. I found it absolutely terrifying but it was fun too and I'm glad I did it. The hardest part was they give you a giant board for a beginner because it is easier to stand up on. The problem was the board was so darn big I couldn't have control of it bringing it back and forth in the water.

The only thing I ever did with surfers is photograph them.

I wouldn't say "I am a surfer" but I do go surfing (::ahem:: falling down repeatedly) on occasion. I love it. Honestly, for me, I get beat up for 2 hours but that ONE time I get up makes the whole time worth it.
I am going to Costa Rica next month and DH bought me some lessons. 
It sounds like I'm in gonna be eating a lot of sand and drinking a lot of seawater.
Have a wonderful time in Costa Rica!What area are you going to? DH has a coworker friend over there that surfs a lot.

The last time I went, it was too rough for a beginner and my board gave me a black eye! My advice...have fun because just getting on your knees is a thrill!

No, not enough time. I would have loved to see the Great Barrier Reef, but I should still be able to get some diving done in Sydney.
