Is a fever a reason to not get shots?

DD felt warm this morning. MIL just called to tell me that she has 101.5 fever. Mikayla is going for a well visit and is supposed to get some vaccinations (mmr being one of them)

Is the fever a reason not to do the shots today? Is there a rationale behind that?

I would not gives shots if my kids had a fever. You would not be able to tell if they had a reaction to something. I would take her in for the visit but hold off on the shots for a week or so.

Ok, thanks for answering....she NEVER has fevers...I actually think this is her first one....she is kind of out of it too....very tired, clingy, etc. I wonder what it could be. I am glad she has an appointment today. Her "well visit" may turn into a "sick visit" Chat Icon

Thanks again Chat Icon

I think if you tell the doctor she has a fever they will advise that you re-schedule the shots. I would call and let them know before you bring her there.

Hope she's feeling better soon Chat Icon

I wouldn't get the shots either, go back in a week or two for those.

I would say hold off...but definitely let the doctor take a look at her and make a call. There have been times where Lucas had a cold (although very different from a fever) and sometimes it was okay to get the shot and other times we waited.

ITA. Our ped. usually takes DS' temp before any vaccinations or if I mention it, he tells us to reschedule.

I would not give the MMR or another shot if you child has a fever - esp the MMR or other one like it (chicken pox etc) b.c it I think a live virus shot so their immune systems should be strong before giving it. Can you change it from a well to a sick visit and just get your DD checked out since she does have a fever?

I believe Dr Sears and I have read elsewhere states that it is a live virus vaccine and so their immune systems should be healthy and strong at the time of the shot.

They usually won't give vaccinations with a fever, especially with MMR since it's a live vaccine.
The reasoning is usually that your immune system is compromised at the time of a current infection.

No shots with a fever, my ped won't do it at all.....
When you have a fever, your immune system is fighting something, and you don't want to introduce a new virus when they aren't 100%....

Yes. My ped has a policy that they will not administer the shots if the child is off or feverish.
