Irresponsible contractors!!

How do you handle this? I am having work done in my home- new kitchen and dining room ceiling. The problem is so many of these contractors who come for estimates/measuring either no show or are late (with no call). I usually deem them as irresponsible and cancel them all together if they do this. However my fiance thinks I am too harsh and "crazy" not giving them a chance. What would you do? I just feel that if they cannot manage their time and appointments, then they are not getting my business. I'm sick of fighting with him ab this!!

Re: Irresponsible contractors!!

if they arent calling to let you know they will be late then id feel that way... but unfortunatley shyt happens, sometimes people are late and its not always or only their fault... id give them the benefit of the doubt here... unless its a chronic issue with them

The no-shows would be written off immediately.

Re: Irresponsible contractors!!

We dismissed potential contractors immediately for being late or giving us the runaround with estimates. I figure if they can't even get that right, who wants to deal with that for the duration of a project?

I wouldn't re-schedule with the no-shows -- if this is how they treat you when they're trying to get your business, imagine how they'll be once you've committed time, money, resources to them.

For the ones who show up late, I'd ask them why they're late and remind them how much you appreciate making appointments because you have taken time out of YOUR schedule to meet with them. If they're obscenely late (more than 30min), I probably wouldn't meet with them at all.

My favorite late/no-show contractor made me laugh, actually. We called him at 30 min past the appointment to ask if he was still coming and he said, "Hold on - I just stopped to get a haircut. Be there soon."

You're completely right in cancelling on these no-shows and tardy contractors. If they treat your time with so little respect, imagine what happens once you hire them!

I must have contacted 30+ contractors for various projects in my house the past year and most of them are either no-shows, late, no estimates (after bothering to show up), or just plain hard to get a hold off afterwards!

I hired this one supposedly good electrician to work on my house for a 3 day project and it's like pulling teeth trying to get him to come finish up the work! He doesn't even pick up his phone and would respond to my email when he feels like it.

Most contractors are disorganized and unprofessional, it's rare to find one who you would want to use again or recommend.

Re: Irresponsible contractors!!

DH is a contractor. He usually gets to estimates 30 minutes early and then drives around the block until the time of the appointment. He hates getting places late.

More than 15 min late or no shows = wouldn't get my business.
