iPhone Crapped Out - Has this happened to anyone?

DH has a iPhone 3gs - 1.5 years old. He is in the middle of driving from NY to FL by himself and his iPhone completely crapped out :( He had in plugged in the car and unplugged it to call me and a message came up on the screen that said he needed to connected to iTunes and download the new 4.0 version. Would not work at all. So, once he gets to hotel, he tries to update on iTunes on his laptop and it tells him he needs to restore to factory settings. He tries to do this and it tells him it cannot update. It is not recognizing anything and all he can do is call 911. He called me from the hotel front desk to tell me all of this. He may stop in the Apple store in Jacksonville FL tomorrow as he drives through, but looks like he is going to lose EVERYTHING on the phone :( Has anyone had this happen or know what's going on??

THis happened to me when I updated iTunes and the OS software at the same time. I had to do a "recovery" on the phone and luckily, without me even realizing it, everything had been backed up so I didn't lose anything. Apple should be able to get him useage of the phone but he'll have to reconnect to iTUnes to update and restore all of his apps, contacts, etc..

when you sync it automatically backs up in itunes so he *should* be ok.

He's pretty sure he backed up a few weeks ago. But when he plugs in to Itunes, NOTHING happens. Good thing is he has the laptop with him so hopefully Apple can figure this all out.

So, he just left the Apple Store in Jacksonville. They pretty much told him there's nothing they can do and his phone in done. How there is nothing to do, I don't know!!!!!
