Insurance question

I'm usually pretty good with deciphering insurance policies but I'm stumped on this one. I'm being offered a new job (through the state) and aside from the fact that the insurance is more $$ than what I pay now (and I have excellent insurance) there is also a waiting period. Is this standard? I have a small child, I cannot go over a month without insurance!

Insurance question

A waiting period is standard. You can carry cobra from your current job in the mean time or look into a plan on the NY health exchange. One month is actually a short waiting period.

This. You'll get COBRA from your previous job that will carry you through until your new insurance kicks in.

Ugh, cobra is a fortune! I don't remember having this happen when I got my current job- my insurance kicked in immediately. I keep hearing how great the state is to work for and I'm over here likeChat Icon

I haven't decided to take this new job yet and this is definitely a deterrent.

For what it's worth, an HR person at a prior job told me to never decline COBRA. Just take the paperwork and say you'll consider it. Don't do anything with it. If something happens in the in-between period, you can elect for COBRA after the fact (as long as you didn't actually decline), pay the premium, and you'll be covered.

ETA - 60 day period. So if you elect on day 60, you'll be covered since day 1 (your first day of no health insurance with your job).

"You have 60 days after you lose your benefits to elect to pay for COBRA coverage. However, even if you enroll on Day 60, your coverage is retroactive to Day 1. Of course, you’ll have to pay the retroactive premiums for that period. Thus, you could technically waive your COBRA coverage initially, and then wait to see if you incur any medical bills. If you manage to get on a new health plan on Day 30 or Day 55 with no medical bills, then you’ll still be guaranteed full coverage going forward and you won’t have paid anything during your gap."

This.
And cross your fingers.

A waiting period is standard, however my last job offered insurance from day 1. That is not the norm though.

Maybe you can try to work into your employment agreement with the new position reimbursement for COBRA expenses?
