Insurance increase once baby comes?
I just found out that I will have to pay $300 out of pocket once comes for my insurance premium increase!
Anyone else know anything about this and is there anyway to get baby insurance for less?
I have Blue Cross Blue Shield.
TIA!!

Re: Insurance increase once baby comes?
Most employers (though not all) cover a lot more for the employee's health insurance than for members of the family. You'll be going from either a single person policy or you and a spouse to a family policy, which is going to cost more. Once you already have a family policy though, it doesn't get increased again if you should have more children.
When we had DD, DH was working at his old job where we had a very high amt. to contribute towards our insurance. Our share went up a lot more than $300 per month. Fortunately DH is now with a different company with much better insurance.
I do believe it is just one of those things that falls under the whole...kids cost a lot of money.

Re: Insurance increase once baby comes?
It's about $400 per month to add a child onto my policy. I also have BC/BS. And once the child is on for the additional $400/mo, we have a $1150 deductible for baby, in addition to a 10% coinsurance for visits.
We're going to look into Child Health Plus through BC/BS. No copays, no deductibles, and much less per month. I recently learned that it's not JUST for economically-challenged families... but the monthly premium is income based.

We've looked into this already also and our insurance goes up close to $200 a month. It svcks but it's just one of those things you have to deal with I guess.

Re: Insurance increase once baby comes?
Unfortunately that is about right - I would had to pay $450 a month or so when I had DD if I kept working b.c my insurance only covered me and then I had to pay if I added a spouse or children. It is cheaper generally to add just the spouse - but the price goes up once you add children - but it is the same price I think for 1 child as for 3. It was one thing that made my decision to stop working easier as it was just one more expense to add to the daycare, commuting to NYC etc.

Wow Lizzy! That stinks. We have the family plan for DH and I right now so no change in amount for adding a child. Our options were either individual or family so once we got married we switched to family.

Re: Insurance increase once baby comes?
my current bcbs plan is self & spouse... when baby comes I have to switch it to family... mine is around $500 extra for the year, but it comes out of your paycheck - not all in the begining

Re: Insurance increase once baby comes?
Usually your insurance company will then cover you as a family and therefore your deductibles for the family go up. I've never heard of supplimental insurance. I'm sure if there is you will pay more than $300.

Re: Insurance increase once baby comes?
DH and I have seperate insurances right now. We are going to start a family plan tommorrow, and we will pay around $150 more a month then we pay now. I know DH has to pay around $200-300 to start the plan. It has something to do with the fact he is a teacher and they don't have pay checks during the summer.
