Installing hi-hats.... difficult?

Does anyone know a contractor that can install hi-hats?

I have a pair of those long tube lights in my kitchen. You know the rectangular ones that have like 3ft light bulbs in them?

I want to remove those... and install hi-hats. I would need a contractor to come in... take down the existing lights... install the hihats.... and spackle and sheet rock where the existing lights stood.

If anyone can offer any info on this... it would be appreciated. I do not think I have access to the ceiling from the floor above... which would make this install a little more difficult.

That would be key because installing them is not that hard. We have a hi-ranch built in 1962 where there were no lights in the ceilings of any room, so when we moved in, my DH was able to get into the "attic" space and install hi-hats in every room.

What is above your kitchen where you want to install them?

Sorry I don't have any contractor recommendations though.

Part of my kitchen is unfinished space that I can get to. But the other half is a finished spot on my 2nd floor.

I am currently talking to a contractor about this. He says he has to do this job from the 1st floor since I have no attic access.

He says he has to "remove the drywall in paths along the ceiling from the first hi-hat you are installing to the 6th one, all on the finished side in order to run the electrical wiring to each can. This means you will be replacing much more drywall than just the flouresent cuttouts. "

He quotes me $675 for the job... and it would take him about three days to do it. I have to supply all the parts.

Our attic does not span our whole house since we have a low pitch roof. Very few of our rooms had lights in the ceilings and there is no light in the foyer or outlet. Our best man is an electrician and he told us that he would have to do a trench in the ceilings and or walls to run the electric for any of the places that he could not access via the attic or basement. My father who is a painter/ wallpaper hangers said it's an easy patch job that he could do to fix the trench. I would assume though that around the old box you would need more dry wall.

I don't know if any of that helps or not.

That price sounds pretty cheap. My dad is an electrician and he charges $150 - $200 per can depending on if the wiring needs to be snaked, which sounds like yours does and he wouldn't repair any drywall.

They're really easy to install for electricians. However, they charge a pretty penny to do it. I would recommend seeing if you have a friend or family member who is an electrician and could do it on the cheap(er).
