infant rolling over in sleep - help

ds is 4 months old and just started to roll from his back to his stomach in his crib. The problem is he appears to HATES sleeping on his stomach.
He has been rolling from tummy to back for a while but for some reason when he wakes in the middle of the night on his tummy he flips out SCREAMING his head off instead of just turning over. I turn him over but he doesnt calm down. last night he ended up staying awake from 2-4am! i was able to calm him down but as soon as i put him back in his crib he would roll over and scream again....this is what went on for 2 hours.
is there anything i can do to stop him from rolling? During the day he will lay on his playmat and roll both ways without a problem. its just something with nighttime. is it something he will grow out of? should i roll a blanket and place it next to him...is that even safe?

Unfortunately, you can't keep him from rolling. I would go in and soothe him and put him back to sleep on his back. Hopefully he will get used to sleeping on his belly, stay on his back, or learn how to turn himself. If you notice he's always rolling one way, you can place him against the crib (if there are no bumpers or anything) and hope that keeps him from rolling. DS also started tummy sleeping at 4mo, but didn't cry, so totally different story!

Unfortunately it's a phase. All my kids did this. Took about a week or 2 before either they were ok with sleeping on their tummy or rolled back over. DH and I literally would go in and flip them sometimes 4 times in an hour. It was crazy.

Do you have him in a sleep sack or something, that's preventing him from being able to roll back over?

no - hes just in pajamas
i was thinking of putting him in a sleep sack tonight to try prevent him from rolling to his tummy in the first place but im not sure that will work.

he slept on his tummy for 2+ hours last night without a peep but the moment he wakes and realizes he is on his tummy its freak out time
