Infant question

If you infant had allergy testing due to a reaction to a food, did they have the skin or blood test done?

Infant having allergy testing, blood or skin test

I did a skin test for my son at 7 months, they didn’t offer me a blood test. Only thing they wouldn’t test is penicillin

Why would they test penicillin? Did he ever take it?

:( How difficult was that, drawing blood from an infant?

Dd had a blood test done at a year. The blood draw was rough bc we went to someone that sucked ands failed twice to get the job done. After that I took her to Good Sam and they were amazing.

My younger one needed several blood draws starting around 2 months old and I took her to Stony Brook's outpatient lab every time and they were also amazing.

Blood test with peds and then confirmed with skin testing at the allergist. My allergist then alternates each year with skin and blood.

Re: Infant having allergy testing, blood or skin test

We've had both. Our first trip the allergist (DD was 4 months old) they did a skin test for the 8 major allergens. I was EBF so I cut all of her allergens out of my diet. We didn't see an improvement so at 6 months, we went for blood work. They were literally able to test for everything I eat, from chocolate, to poppy seeds. DD is 3 now and we do repeat blood work annually. The blood work is very precise. It can test for different components of milk, eggs, peanuts, etc. So say you're allergic to eggs, it can help indicate if you can eat baked eggs (like in a dessert, for example) or not. Blood work will also give an IgE number for each allergen tested and a class number (severity of allergy) based on the IgE information. You can also see how those numbers compare to the patient's previous tests and see if the allergy is becoming less severe.

ETA: As for the blood draw, we go to the lab at Good Sam hospital in West Islip. They have phlebotomists that specialize in pediatrics and that work in the NICU. They are great. That lab is OON for me but I gladly go and pay double my copay just to have them do it.

Infant question

DS was 11 or 12 months so right on the cusp of being a toddler I guess. They did both blood and skin tests.

Infant question

my allergist does skin testing first. no blood work for a negative reaction. my oldest has multiple allergies so he's had blood and skin testing done. my other 2, only skin. and negative so far.
