Infant Car Seat

My DD was born in October 09 - 2nd DC will be born next month. Do I need a new infant car seat or can I use hers? A friend said there is a five year period when they are valid, after that I would have to buy a new one. Can anyone advise? The seat and bases are in perfect condition (I only used it for about 5 months with DD1).

TIA

Re: Infant Car Seat

most carseats dont expire for about 6 years... i just wondered this the other day since my first son is 3 1/2 & our 2nd baby is due in about a month. if you have a Graco, the expiration date is imprinted on the bottom of the seat, not on one of the stickers. mine doesnt expire till 2016 & it was made in 2010

Personally, I would use the same seat as long as the padding looked ok.

Infant Car Seat

What kind of seat is it? Graco, Chicco, Britax, Evenflo? ? Depending on the month of manufacture of it has a 5 year expiration you might be okay for a few months. If it is a seat that has a 6 year expiration you will be okay for a bit longer.

Just looking at the padding is not going to have any bearing on the integrity of the plastic structure. Over time plastic deteriorates and can have cracks that may not be able to be seen by the eye. In an accident the forces can cause the seat to act in a way that it should not placing your child at danger.

Also, you will want to look up the seat model to see if there have been any recalls on it that should be corrected.

My 1st was also born in 09 and I just had another ds. The expiration date is 6 years from the manufacture date which you can find on the actual seat. Even though I received mine as a present in mid 2009 it was manufactured in dec 08. I am using the car seat again but probably wouldn't use it much past the 6 years.

Re: Infant Car Seat

My first was born in 09 and I used the same car seat for my second in 2012. Now I'm having my third and I'm going to get a new seat. My seat looks great but I'm more comfortable with something newer.

Thank you for all of the responses. It's a peg perego and about to expire as per the sticker on the seat. Better safe than sorry although I was really hoping to reuse it.
