In-ground sprinklers

We need to have ours redone, we have such horrible sprinklers. We had an estimate of $2,000 to put in 8 zones (front and back yard) on 100x100 property including flowerbeds. Is this a good price?

Re: In-ground sprinklers

sounds like a good price.

the going rate is $350-$500 per zone.

Our property is the same size as yours, we have the same zones and it cost us a little less a few years ago.

What is horrible about the in-ground sprinklers you have? There's not much to a sprinkler system. You might just require new sprinkler heads which will be a whole lot cheaper then replacing the entire system. What is wrong with the current system?

Well, according to the guy who normally does our sprinklers told us it's a cheap home depot job...not all the sprinkler heads work and the backyard has a leak somewhere. The sprinkler heads that we have now only cover a small amount of our grass. It doesn't reach the flower beds and the front part of our grass. We basically need a whole new system.

This is just my opinion....

* Get a second opinion.
* Find the leak and replace that section (if necessary) first before replacing any heads. The leaks could be the cause of the problems you describe.
* Sprinkler heads can be replaced for less than $15.

Really, you could save a lot of money here.

Agreed.

I definitely know I have a "home depot" job at my house. It still works fine and does the job.

I found a guy on craigslist that moved two zones for me (moved four heads in each zone because I had a concrete patio put in). He did this for $175 a zone, which included everything except for the zone valves themselves (I already had the valves set up with my controller). He had to dig new trenches for each head and position them properly.

He also fixed any existing sprinkler heads that weren't working properly for $10 a head. I'll probably have him do my winterization as well.

So I don't see how you can't find a better quote if you shop it around.

You should definitely get a second opinion. Depending on the problem sprinkler heads can be fairly easy to replace. I replace one of mine the other day myself. The top was cracked as was some of the piping where it pops out.

Stef,

Call Kenny over at KC Irrigation Mist in Commack. He's been around for years and does great work. My hubby uses him for all his jobs and we've personally used him along with my parents and inlaws.

do you need 8 zones? We have 6 zones for 1/2 acre (although about 1/3 of our backyard is the pool) - and one of the zones is just for the veggie garden.

Either way, we use Rain Rich for our seasonal maintenance and we like them...they are not the cheapest, but he's been around forever and offers good service

Re: In-ground sprinklers

I have a great sprinkler guy. We've used him a couple of times to update our system. He replaced a lot of the sprinkler heads because they weren't reaching all areas an he also replaced a couple of pipes (whatever you call them) under the dirt. We paid like $500. Let me know if you want his number.
Edited to add that we also have 8 zones.
