I'm nervous....
I booked a surprise trip for DH and I to go to Punta Cana in the DR for June. We're staying at the excellence resort.
DH's Boss just came back yesterday from spending a week in the DR (not sure where, but it was at a private home) and stated that his place was robbed and he had to fght the robber and his accomplice off with a table, and didn't realize they had a gun until they ran away. The police were called but didn't show until the next day. The robbers even cut down the barbed wire around their compound.
His other co-worker came back in January, stayed at a resort that had a door man who needed to unlock the front door and allow them in before locking the door again, and they woke one night to someone going through their bags in their room, taking their wallets, passport, etc.
Did I just book a trip into the Lion's Den?

The DR is a place where you have to stay on the resort property. I would never ever stay in a private house.
The resorts have security, you will be fine there, but don;t really leave and go exploring on your own.

ITA!!! DH's father went gambling off the resort... and let's just say the scene turned into something you see on the Sopranos and he had to get bailed out! CRAZINESS!
you're fine on a major resort, but i wouldn't leave property. and i've heard excellent things about that resort, so i'm sure you're fine!!!

I wouldn't worry. Enjoy your vacation. Excursions that are set up through the hotel should be fine. I'm sure they use the same vendors daily. Use the same caution you would use traveling anywhere in the world. If something feels wrong or bad it is.

ITA. I wouldn't worry about the excursions offered by the resort. You'll be with people who know the island. It's just not a good idea to venture off by yourselves, unguided.

Don't be nervous. The resorts are beautiful, and you will have a wonderful time.
I wouldn't be nervous about booking an excursion either. I did 2 and had a great time on both. 1st excursion we did was the offroading jeep tour. Every couple got their own jeep and you got a tour of the villages. It was eyeopening to see what a third world country is like and I will never forget that experience. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The jeep tour ended with a traditional dominican dinner at a ranch on the beach with horseback riding. Amazing. 2nd excursion was a snorkel booze cruise thingy. That was alot of fun too.

Don't be nervous we went to the DR in December of 07 and stayed at the Excellence and had a wonderful time. I would suggest just staying on the property and not going on tours.
