"I'm doing <blank> if <blank> is elected!"

Why do people publicly make hyperbolic statements about what they'll do if so-and-so is elected? I hear that every 4 years. Nobody ever plans on following through with any of it. It just makes them look dumb.
Sure, you'll be upset. Maybe even declare that you'll do something extreme, but not something so hyperbolic that you'll never do it....

.... and if you publicly make a declaration, you should be required to follow through with it....

I'm as upset as anyone over these results but the ONLY thing I'm doing post election is what I've always done..............take care of my kids and husband, cook, clean, do laundry, and try to continue life as normal.

I really don't think I'd enjoy living in Canada anyway!

Well my coworker said she was taking the day off if Trump was elected and she followed through. lol

I think its just meant in a tongue in cheek sort of way. I think its assumed they aren't literally speaking. I dont think it makes anyone sound stupid......as I never thought they were actually serious when they said it.

Just like when I am having a bad day at work and I say "someone just kill me" - I dont ACTUALLY want someone to kill me.

If everyone who said they would leave for Canada did, there will be a lot more empty seats on the LIRR during rush hour.

Celebrities always whine when they don't get their way. Like threatening the US that they will leave if THEIR candidate is not elected....good go! Bryan Cranston was another one who said he's leaving....good riddance!
