I'm confussed...help please...
This is my first IUI cycle. Tonight will be my 4th night on Femara (one more to go). Then I have to do a trigget shot (Ovidrel) - I guess that's used to trigger ovulation?? I'm a little confused. Does that mean that if I don't use the shot I won't be able to ovulate on my own? I've always been able to ovulate on my own and lately I would get a surge on day 10. I'm wondering, what if I ovulate on my own this month and miss the opportunity for the IUI... or is it that I can't ovulate until I use the trigger shot? Also, should I be using OPKs this month, do they work when taking medication or is it that the doctor determines when ovulation is coming with the pelvic sono? Help

Are you under the care of an OB/GYN or an RE? When on any type of fertility medication, you should be monitored a few times during the cycle. You shouldn't administer the ovidrel with out knowing if you have mature follies or not. I would call your Dr. to ask these questions...all of our experiences are so different.
ETA: Good luck!

Re: I'm confussed...help please...
With all my IUI's the RE monitored me with sonograms to see when my follies looked almost mature ...He would then tell me what day/time to do the shot ( or sometimes it was done in office)..I personally did not ovulate on my own. The IUI was always done 24-36 hours after the shot was taken.....
The reason for the shot is to accurately time the IUI for the best possible results...Good Luck !!

I O'd on my own. My RE still had me use the trigger shot so that they could time the O to work best w/ the IUI. The dr should be monitoring you to see how the follies are growing. Once they get to around 20 or so, they'll give u instructions on when to do the shot. I always used to freak out and think they would time it wrong, but i guess u just have to trust them!!!
Good luck!

Re: I'm confussed...help please...
Basically.. Do NOT use the ovidrel until the RE says to!!
You see Dr.B, right? ... The way it usually works is you go for monitoring appointments while you're on the meds to see how you're responding. When he sees there are 1.. 2.. maybe 3 ... mature follies (I believe they should be over 18mm) then he will tell you to use the ovidrel that night and come in for an IUI the next day. It's usually some variant of that.
Last cycle I had mature follies but my lining was still too thin so I had to take a medication for two days before using Ovidrel.. so you really just have to wait and see what the situation is. When is your next monitoring appointment? If you just finished your 4th femara.. I'm assuming you go back by like Wednesday right? Ask Dr.B all your questions, he is SO patient and will answer EVERYTHING!!!!!!!
Good luck!!!!!!
Oh- and to answer your question about ovulation and Ovidrel- you can still ovulate on your own but the Ovidrel helps with timing purposes for the IUI. Even if you do ovulate on your own and use Ovidrel, it won't do any harm!!

I'm going back on Thursday for monitoring, which is CD 8. That's a little early for me to ovulate on my own so I guess that Dr. B should be able to catch it before it happens.... So, I guess no need to test with OPKs this cycle, right? ( I've spent so much money on those )

Re: I'm confussed...help please...
Once i started my IUI cycles and monitoring, i stopped using OPK's. I was exhausted and happy to let Dr B worry about my O'ing at that point
