I'm coming here to admit...

that I am seriously the worst wife when it comes to cooking!

I NEVER know what to make.
I hate trying to figure out what would satisfy a meat eater and a vegetarian.
I don't enjoy making dinner every night.
I love hosting holidays but dinner every night...bleh!
I hate grocery shopping.
I hate having a stocked kitchen and NOT knowing what to make.
I hate messing up my kitchen.
I hate dinner taking an hour and THEN I still have to clean it.

There. I admit my faults.

Amen, sister!

I am the same way.. I hate doing stuff in the kitchen I feel like I spend so much time doing something for it to be over in less than 15 minutes lol.. I learn to figure to write down a meal plan for 2 weeks that way i have a better idea when I go into the kitchen what I am going to do.

Only 9 steps left!!!

As far as what to make, try some simple recipes - look on the back of some of your jars (soup, rice, pasta, tomatoes).

As far as dirting your kitchen - try one pot recipes

Try to make things you can re-use. Once I made pasta w/ meat sauce. There wasn't really enough left over for another meal so I added a can of black beans ($.49) and some spices and turned it into a chili

Make friends w/ Peapod

There are tons of things you can make in under 30 minutes - ask Rachael Ray

House rule - I cook, you clean.

I am with you on everything!!! I think we take out a lot or make wholewheat pasta, salads, grilling (DH does since he eats meat)...
Oh... and I'm especially with you on messing up the kitchen Chat Icon

Will you cook meat?

There are a lot of salad/pasta dishes that you can order in a restaurant and then add meat/chicken/shrimp - maybe that would be a way to start.

Have DH grill up chicken and steak 1x a week so he can add it to your salad/pasta/grain.

ETA: What about mexican food - like nachos or tacos.

You can make/have seasoned chop meat for DH and vege beans for you - some tomatoes, olives, hot peppers, sour cream, cheese and dinner is ready - just add what you want.

You can do it with the little pizza crusts too - you can have grilled veges and DH can put some sliced deli meat/ham, pepperoni.

You can make paninis - he can have his meat and you can have a vege one.

Grilled portabella mushrooms can be used in place of chicken or hamburgers.

Re: I'm coming here to admit...

I taught myself how to cook and I did through trial and error.

I collected a lot of cookbooks, scoured the Internet for recipes, then I just tried them out. Some good, some not so good. I know when I can take time to try something new, or need something quick. I really wanted recipes other than baked ziti, meatloaf, etc.

This is what I do/did and I find cooking a good downtime for me...if you want some cookbooks, let me know! I have tons!

Thanks ladies. You know what...I SHOULD look at it like a good way of windwinding rather than stressing over it.

Re: I'm coming here to admit...

I also have the worst time on menu planning day and sometimes get super frustrated going through the papers and trying to figure out what I want, what's on sale, what we like.. blech.

As much as I LOOOVE cooking, I have nights where the LAST thing I feel like doing is rattling a bunch of pots and pans around. Especially when I have 2 kids whining that they hate chicken or fish or beef or whatever. And doing it while trying to help 2 kids with their homework, listen to messages and pay attention to all that happened to this one or that one during the day. Sometimes I feel like I should have a big red nose and giant shoes one while I juggle brightly colored balls!

Sometimes I just wing it with my ingredients and I make a mess and it doesnt' taste great and I just want to crawl in my bed and sleep.. but...

I CAN'T because then I have to clean the whole damn kitchen .. all the while thinking that I get to do it ALL AGAIN the next day.

But then.. if we go through a weekend where we are out and about and happen to have a lot of restaurant food.. I get really bad cravings for home cooked stuff.

I overcook. All the time. I always have leftovers. We used to have a lot of 'drop in' dinner guests and I can't get out of the habit of making extra just in case.

I love planning holidays - but my plans always seem to be better than my execution relative to presentation. I don't know why.

Those are (some) of MY faults.. you ain't alone!

Re: I'm coming here to admit...

You sound exactly like me!

I eat many different foods and DH is very picky.

He is happy with the same few things all the time.

He works very late, most nights he comes home anywhere from 8pm-11pm
Those nights i just fend for myself as does he.

I hate messing up the pots and pans, and the dishes and the counters and cooktop!
I hate food shopping with a passion!

I usually cook once a week. or just make myself something small and healthy
