I'm a bundle of nerves...UPDATED
I talk to my surgeon today over the phone today and I see him next week. The doctors (surgeon & cardiologist) were waiting so long to schedule my surgery because they had a test case of someone getting a valve repair instead of replacement. Well, the test case needed another surgery after 6 weeks, so replacement is off the table for me. I will be getting the valve repair.
I want to see if I can wait until after Gracie's first birthday party, if they will let me. IS this stupid, selfish, etc? I mean they had me wait since January and I really want to see family & friends before I go in for surgery, ya know? I feel nervous to ask because this surgeon is booked solid and would be making "room for me" in his schedule. Also, I want to loose more weight before surgery. The docs think my weight has no bearing on the surgeries success. However, I think I would heal quicker if I lost at least 10 more lbs by May. I guess I am procrastinating, scared that this is really happening now and I am nervous . Am I being ridiculous?
What are your thoughts? Thanks for letting me get my nervous energy out, I have to call him at 10AM.
UPDATED: I called the surgeon and his b!tch receptionist tells me that I can only schedule an appointment to see him, I cannot talk to him. I explained that he called me Friday and told me to call today at 10AM. She puts me on hold, comes back on and says he is at a convention and I must have "been mistaken". I told her that I wanted to leave a message for him and she says "I would not expect a call back today, sweetie" in a very condescending way. So I told her that I have a 10 1/2 month old an I staring open heart surgery in the face and to her I may be another "number" to her, but discussing this with the surgeon is important to me and my family. Then, I told her that she needs to work on her people skills and hung up. She called me back to apologize. At least she did that. WTH? If you hate your job so much that you are treating patents that way, f'ing quit already! UGH! Ok, vent over.
After all that, I made an appointment for Friday 3/30 at 9AM. You can be sure that I will tell the surgeon about my experience and I hope she does not treat his patents like that anymore.

First I would definitely see if you can wait until Graces' 1st birthday. If it does not affect your health. And I don't think that is being selfish at all

Re: I'm a bundle of nerves...
I think you should do what you're most comfortable with. Are you getting a repair or replacement? As for the "test case", isn't it possible that you would have different results?
Al has had patients that require a second clip/repair, but many don't require a second procedure. It seems like its a hard call to make based on one case.
If another month or two isn't putting you at risk, I would wait.

The test case had what I have, Corrected L-Transposition with the heart functioning the same as mine. The cardiologist told me that the test case's heart was very similar to mine and that is why we had a wait and see approach the last 2 months. This is so complicated. Because Naturally corrected l-transposition is very different from surgically corrected transposition, as I understand it.
What are Al's thoughts on this? Has he worked on a l-transpositions before? TIA

I'm not sure how familiar he is with "Corrected L-Transposition". His expertise is repairing mitral valve prolapse.
He's at the cardiologist convention in New Orleans right now, but I'll ask him when he gets home tomorrow.

Thanks! My cardiologist is there too. HE left a message on Friday that he will be away at a convention until Wednesday. Small world, right?
I appreciate you being willing to ask him. Tell him it is my tricuspid valve. Thanks!
Well, off to call the surgeon.

First of all, . As far as waiting goes, you should atleast ask, there's no harm in that. Ultimately though, you should probably do what the Dr. thinks is best.

Does losing weight effect heart muscle? I thought it weakened it, if it was dramatic?

Dina I am just seeing this post now
Honestly, if it was ok with my Dr's and it didn't add additional risk to wait, I would. Is it scheduled now?
Grace's 1st bday will be here before you know it.
I enjoyed our coffee today
we MUST do it again!
