IL's are putting their dog down today - what can I do?
DH's childhood dog has been very sick for some time. This morning he couldn't walk anymore and they're on their way to the vet with him now. We're about 95% sure he's going to have to be put down this afternoon. My MIL will be devastated. This dog was her 3rd baby. And my DH and his sister absolutely adored this dog. It was the first dog they ever had and I know they will both take this incredibly hard. I guess I'm just asking how I can be there for them all. IS there something I can send to my IL's? Something I can do? I feel awful...I was in their shoes a year ago when my family dog had to be put to sleep and it was devastating for my family.

Ugh it's so hard. In the beginning it's hard to even get sympathy from anyone, because it's so raw and fresh.
I would just call them or text/email your condolences if the dog passes today, and then maybe in a few weeks, when things aren't as fresh, you can get them something to memorialize the dog. I am sure if you look online you can find things- something for the garden, a frame with a picture of the dog, etc. Our vet sent us a sympathy card after our cat passed and it had some seeds we can plant in his memory so that when the flowers come up each year we can be reminded of him. I thought that was nice.
But again, I would do that after a few weeks- not right away. For now, just a phone call or email.

A garden memorial would be nice - a small statue or plaque personalized with the dog's name, a wind chime.
As for today, just call them and say how sorry you are, or if they are close by, take dinner over to them that you can all share together.
It's not easy. I'm so sorry.

.
This is a great idea. Thank you. They live a few minutes down the road, so this would be easy to do and I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

My parents sent us a card. And my mil made us a little photobook with pictures of our dog throughout the years.
