IL vent
When DH & I were looking for houses last year his parents suggested we buy a house with an apartment so they can live with us down the road...if we did this they would help us with the down payment. For some stupid reason, I agreed to this arrangement thinking it would be a good idea. So now we've been in the house for just about a year, they still have not moved in - not planning to until next summer. They spend weekends here on occassion getting their apartment set up. As nice as they are, my IL's are a big time PITA! Especially MIL - she suggested we get an intercom system so they can "talk" to us. She also suggested that we put up an accordian wall in our lower level so they can come upstairs when we have guests staying downstairs...we live in a bi-level/raised ranch. DH & I both said NO to her ideas. I already am feeling that this is going to be an "Everybody Loves Raymond" episode when they move in!

Re: IL vent
That is WAY to close for comfort me!
My IL's are 4 blocks away and that proves to be to close at times.

Re: IL vent
I too live with my MIL. (she has an apartment in our house) It definitely has its benefits but it is a huge adjustment and you have to have very open communication about boundaries. Also, everyone once in a while just come on here and vent. It helps get it all out.

Re: IL vent
Oh my that's way too close for comfort... I couldn't live within walking distance to my ILs and I like them a lot... I could stand to be that close to my parents, but they have a much better sense of boundaries... Even then, I need at least a 10 - 15 minute drive.
My mom always said you should always live at least 2 subway stops from your ILs / parents. (She grew up in Brooklyn!)
ETA - Hopefully after an open and frank discussion about boundaries, things will work out all right. Just be sure to talk to them before they move in...
