If your dr said no to certain foods

do you still eat them?
cold cuts/shrimp/tuna/weenies etc.

I do. moderation of course.

I have been drinking more diet coke than I would like but sometimes I need carbonation in my life.

Re: If your dr said no to certain foods

One week I had a craving for lox and ate that like every day...

I also eat tuna salad and egg salad from the deli. There is only so much you can cut out of your life!

Re: If your dr said no to certain foods

My Doc is pretty laid back and didn't really give me the the list of what I can't have.
I say everything in moderation. I enjoy turkey from a deli once in a while, coffee, choc, etc.

Actually, I bought a big tub of gummy bears from Wegmans the other day and I can't wait to go home and scarf that down Chat Icon

Re: If your dr said no to certain foods

Here's my take on all this food business:

If the food is not recommended because of acute risk (food poisoning issues, etc.) then I avoid those foods.

As for things like tuna, etc., I'm not as strict with those and I think the whole moderation is fine.

Just my two cents! I always say that everyone has to do what they're comfortable with. I know that for me, it would make me super nervous and I woudn't even enjoy the food. But everyone is different!!

I'm just curious, I thought shrimp was perfectly fine. Why aren't we supposed to eat it? I've had it on many occasions this pregnancy.

I have been having shrimp about once a week so I hope it's ok. I don;t eat cold cuts and I dream of an Italian hero. I don't eat tuna and will make my own egg salad at home. To figure out what to eat for lunch has become such a PITA. I don't drink caffeine unless I have a migraine then I will have a small cup of coffee. Don't listen to me though I am crazy with these things.

Re: If your dr said no to certain foods

I am lucky that with both pregnancies (2 different OBs) they only thing they have banned was alcohol, drugs adn smoking so those for me werent an issue. My last ob, who delivered DS and has since retired, was totally laid back and said I could have anything in moderation. She did tell me soda was bad for ME, but I decided to go against that oneChat Icon

ETA: I did switch to regular soda for my pregnancies as I drink too much of it I know and I wanted to limit the artificial sweeteners.

Re: If your dr said no to certain foods

I was given the list of foods to watch out for and have stayed away from sushi Chat Icon

but i've eaten shrimp/scallops/tuna fish since those were on the 'in moderation' list

i understand the reasoning behind no deli meats, and have tried to really stick to it - but 2 or 3 times i've just said 'F it' and had a sandwich from my local deli. I figured that up until about 5 years ago, pregnant women were eating deli sandwiches with no worries and were fine. So, its something I'm comfortable with, having one maybe once a month as a treat.

I drink regular coke every once in a while, and have tea or iced tea almost every day (dr said caffeine in moderation was ok, just don't go overboard)

All in all.. i also believe in 'everything in moderation' is ok, unless its the sushi/raw tuna mercury thing and then i'll completely stay away from it

i may even have a glass of wine as i get further along.. who knows! Chat Icon

On Thursday my OB asked if I was going out for some Corned Beef. I told him he was trying to trap me and there are nitrates in it (all in a joking manner)

and he laughed at me and told me to get over myself. Chat Icon "everything in moderation"

Re: If your dr said no to certain foods

the only things he told me to avoid were raw/undercooked fish and meat, particularly raw tuna. none of which i eat anyway.

as to things that other ppl have said to stay away from... i haven't had cold cuts yet. although i was yearning for them yesterday and they were right in front of me, calling my name... "bear, bear.... eat me bear..."

Re: If your dr said no to certain foods

i have stayed away from what my doctors said to - i figured the list was really rather small and its only for a short time that i shoudn't cheat. I do think about cheating more frequently now but DH says you've gone this long keep going and I do.

I'm a freak too! With my first pregnancy, I didn't have ANY caffeine, tuna, cold cuts, anything!! And all of that, my dr. said was fine to have sparingly! I couldn't bring myself to do it at all! I think I will be exactly the same this time around!

I was the exact same way - never had anything I wasn't supposed to. I was influenced greatly by a coworker who had a child with a heart issue. She said she did everything right and was glad she had because you automatically go to blame yourself when something is wrong with your child and she wouldn't have been able to live with herself had she not "done the right thing". It always just stuck with me.

It depends on what it is. Alcohol I steer clear of, but I have had cold cuts on occasion and have had blue cheese.
