If your child had an Umbilical hernia.....

did it go away on its own? If yes, at what age? I think my ped. said, if it went away on its own, it would do it by the age of 2(i could be wrong). Peyton is 2 years and 2 months and hers is still there.

DD's pretty much went away somewhere around when she was 2. I really cant say that it's *completely* gone... but there is a SIGNIFICANT difference.

my niece has/had one. She's 5 months old and its starting to disappear now. Hers was quite large (especially with her being so small - she was a micro-preemie and is 9lbs now) I believe my sister was told it could take up to 2 years also.

My DS is 2.5 and its still there. At his 2 yr appt the ped said we would wait until he was 3 to discuss sending him to a surgeon since it is very slowly getting smaller. I am still hoping it will go away.

My ped said it should go away by 1 or 2 but they don't consider surgery until at least 3 years old.

DD is 2 months and still has it. It's gotten a little smaller but it's still pretty big. I hate it and hope it goes away soon. Chat Icon

DS was a preemie (not micro preemie, but 32 weeks). He was fine at birth, but at about 1-2 months old, he developed the umbilical hernia. It was HUGE. He's now 3.5 months and it's smaller than it was, but still big.

His Ped said that if it's not gone by 1 year old, they'll send him for a surgical consult. I've heard that it can take up to age 2 to go away, so if his is not gone by a year, I will wait longer since I'd rather avoid surgery. I PRAY it corrects itself on its own! Chat Icon

Re: If your child had an Umbilical hernia.....

DD has one and she'll be 3 in August. Our ped sent us for a surgical consult when she was 2.5. THe surgeon said the hole was just a couple of millimeters and he'd check again in a year but didn't feel she'd need surgery.

She does have an "outy" belly button but nothing protrudes into it.
