If you will be hiring a nanny/sitter...

How are you handling paying this person? Daily? Weekly? Biweekly? What about holidays and vacation time? Will you have the person start before you go back to work? (I would like to so our LO gets used to a routine with the sitter.) We will only need part time care so I'm not sure how to figure this out.

DD started with our sitter when she was 8 weeks olf. DD goes to her house and she is the only child there. I had the sitter meet DD twice before she started there, but I didn't need DD to get used to a schdule, the sitter kind of adjusted to DD's schedule. Plus, the sitter has been doing this for 20+ years, so I knew she'd figure everything out.

I pay weekly (she watches DD 4 days a week). If I choose not to bring DD to the sitter one for my own reason, I still pay her. If I have off on holidays, the sitter is paid. She rarely takes days off, but if she does, usually she is still paid unless it gets to be a lot (like last year she had surgery and couldn't watch DD for 2 weeks, since I had to find alternate care, she understood she wouldn't get paid the whole time.) I let her know months ahead of time when we're taking vacation and she graciously plans her vacations at that time too...I pay her half her weekly salary for those weeks.

We pay her weekly. She has been with us since DS#1 was 4 months. He is now 3.5. She gets 2-3 weeks vacation. Her pay is based upon hourly but if she goes home early we don't reduce her pay. If she stays a little late we don't pay her extra only if she is staying a couple of hours late.
We always pay her if I get the day off and we give her the day off.

I had her come about a week before I started back to work so she could get a feel for his schedule. It is so hard :(


I don't think she really has ever taken a day besides vacation.

I have a nanny 3 days a week. we pay her every 2 weeks and she gets 2 weeks paid vacation. She started 2 weeks before i went back to work. The first couple of days I was showing her the ropes and then after that i would go out for an hour or so at a time and then gradually longer until I was staying out for most of the day. I needed to do that to get myself used to it as well as getting the baby used to it.
ETA: her salary is based off the number of hours she works but i dont reduce it if I get home early and she gets all the standard days off paid in addition to vacation: thanksgiving, christmas, july 4, memorial day, etc.
