If you used a CIO sleep training for naps...

Which one did you use? How long did it take to work? Did you use it exclusively for naps or for bedtime and overnight also?

DD is almost 4 months. She will wake up once a night for a 15-minute snack, but otherwise sleeps well between 8:30-9ish and 7. I swaddle her, nurse her, rock her, play some soft music, and she's out cold at bedtime. If I used a CIO method for naps, would I have to change her bedtime routine?

I would do the same bedtime routine for naps. Try that, seems like the routine works, cio isn't necessary.

Eta: I sleep trained at 3m, without real CiO, we weren't ready for it. But i copied night routine exactly for naps for several weeks before simolifying it and that worked. I follwed the technique described in baby sleep solution by giordano.

I have been having a really hard time with naps for my 3 month old (she sleeps amazing at night--goes right to bed and sleeps for 11-12 hrs!). I have finally gotten her to start napping by mimicking our bedtime routine....I would try that first before CIO as PP suggested.

I had to do cio for naps but not until much later. DD is 11months old. I wasn't comfortable doing it sooner. We did extinction. She gets nuts if we go in so we stay out. I close the blinds, turn on her sound machine, and nurse her. Then I put her in the crib. She would scream then go to sleep. It took probably a week for her to get the idea that is was nap time. She would be so exhausted but would fight sleep so hard. It had to be done. We had done cio for bedtime at 6 months. After a few rounds of teething, and some colds we had to re-do cio. So we hit it all at once bedtime, naps, and middle of the night (still working a little on this one). We never fully mastered middle of the night. She is getting better though.

Rach, I would definitely keep her bedtime routine as is and maybe try doing the same before her naps. When we did CIO (and we had to do it for nighttime as well) we did extinction as Sienna is a woman who knows what she wants and would amp up the crying when she saw us Chat Icon

I am a believer in trying least extreme and then working your way up. I don't think Lila is old enough for full on CIO (3 months, almost 4, right?) so I would just do a naptime routine for now.

That's what I'm doing now (minus the bath). No dice. Chat Icon She falls asleep, but won't stay sleeping for more than 15 minutes.

I was going to email or call you to see if you ran into this problem wit Sienna.

How do you do "extinction?" I hate the idea of full-on CIO, and that's what my ped recommended.

Extinction just basically means when you put them down you do not go back in at all to soothe them. So no patting them on the butt, no rubbing their back, no replacing the pacifier...just put them down, walk out, and let nature take its course. The idea is eventually they WILL fall asleep and each night the crying/protesting will lessen and the end result will be a baby that has learned to soothe themself.

We used extinction for bedtime and middle of the night wakings. It has worked well but they boys (8mth old twins) still cry for about 10 minutes each night. But its def better than it was.

As far as naps we HAVE NOT mastered this yet. Ugh...its been a nightmare. My two only sleep about 15 minutes as well and I have tried everything. So I feel your pain. If you find anything that works for you please let me know.

Best of luck! HTH
