I'm curious too. DD (almost 17 months) sucks her two fingers (palm in...never saw palm out but it sounds adorable! lol). I must admit, seeing her with her lil blankie and those two fingers in her mouth is quite possibly the SWEETEST sight, plus she never needed a pacifier as this is her self-soothing...BUT I do worry about her teeth and wonder when we should try to steer her away from this habit.

PS - I sucked my thumb til I was 5. Only stopped when I became "emabarrased" that other children my age weren't doing it.

My DD is 3 now and has been a thumb sucker since BEFORE she was born! (I have the sono pics Chat Icon ) She only has ever done it when she is tired, it's a calming, relaxation thing for her. Truthfully, especially at your DC's age, there really isn't much you can do. My ped even says you usually have to let it run it's course. Most kids grow out of it on their own. Honestly, I don't know any adults who suck their thumb so I'm not sweating it too much.

this. My nephew sucked his thumb and then stopped one day on his own. He got to that age where he was embarrassed to do it in front of people (once he had friends coming over) and he just stopped completely.

Nothing we tried worked permanently. For a month, "princesses don't suck their thumbs" worked. Then it was "you can't wear nailpolish if you suck your thumb." Ultimately every time she was tired or was sick, she reverted back.

The only thing that's changed is when she turned about 4, she noticed that other kids did not suck their thumbs & curtailed it on her own.

She's 8 now so sucking her thumb is the kiss of death for an elementary school kid but that doesn't stop her at home. They will stop on their own.

Re: if you had a finger sucker/thumb sucker...

DD was a thumb sucker an We decided to help her stop at 3.

First was a rule that she could only do it in her bedroom. She took to it right away. Then she tried stopping but did it during sleep.

I bought a few things to help her stop.

Berenstain Bears and the Bad Habit

Malvala Stop
Tastse AWFUL - this worked during the day but had to remove at night because if she put her thumb in her mouth it would wake her up and we'd have to brush her teeth to get rid of the taste. It hindered eating when she used her hands too but it was a big help at times.

What really did it for us...
Thumb Guard
Available for thumbs or fingers. After a few days DD was asking for it at bed time, after a few weeks she was done sucking her thumb for good.

What do you put on the thumb to soothe/heal the skin that's safe to ingest?
TIA

I did it until I was 9!!! Chat Icon But only in private. My thumb was permanently wrinkled and I had a gap between my front teeth. But my mother said I was the best behaved baby/toddler/child she had ever seen and that I never cried.
I was told by my mother that I would never "mature" - this came at the time that we were about to watch the "you're going to get your period soon" video in school. I quit cold turkey!

DS is only 7 wks and he loves it when his fingers/thumb find his mouth. Honestly, I don't mind! Self-sooth away little one!!! Chat Icon

My DD was a thumb sucker. We tried everything. Nothing stopped her. She did it when tired and cranky. Or while watching TV or going to bed.

We stopped trying to get her to stop. At age 4, just after her birthday, I noticed her in bed one night and she wasn't sucking her thumb. I took notice and watched her like a hawk. Nothing. She completely stopped on her own. Just like that. At age 4. And no lingering teeth issues, thankfully.

Chat Icon I sucked my thumb into college Chat Icon that being said, I never had to get braces, had a slight lisp that went away after 2 speech classes (not sure if it was thumb sucking related) and didn't have any ill side effects.

DD sucks her thumb at 13m and I know there is nothing I can do to stop it.. I think of all of the comfort and relaxation sucking my thumb brought me and I say, enjoy little one Chat Icon
