If you breastfed #1 when pregnant with #2
(or #2 when pregnant with #3, etc), was your new baby born small or impacted by the fact that you breastfed?
My OBGYN said I should stop BFing #1 (17mo), but I am having difficulties and really feel horrible about possibly weaning her before she is ready, but I also don't want to affect baby #2.
Anyone go through this?

Re: If you breastfed #1 when pregnant with #2
I breast fed ds1 all throughout my pregnancy and he self weened two months after I gave birth two months before his second birthday. My midwife said that it was absolutely fine and safe for me to do this and my baby wasn't underweight in fact he was so chubby that they thought he may be at risk for diabetes and tested him everyday in the hospital but he was fine he's just a really tall kid. My midwife said that they only reason she would have told me to stop is if I was having early contractions as breast feeding sometimes leads to contractions and early labor but I didn't have a previous early labor nor did I get contractions from nursing during pregnancy.

nope.....there is no reason to stop...i BF my #1 when pregnant with #2 - but I stopped at her 1st birthday when I was about 5 mop pregnant
It does hurt when they first latch A LOT at times and your supply is often affected - but there is no danger to your child

I can't believe your doctor told you to stop breastfeeding... what an old school, backwards way of thinking. Here are some great resources from Kelly Mom on the subject...
Kelly mom Breastfeeding while PG
I know someone who reported that their supply went down a bit, but I know someone else who reported that her supply went up!!
Good luck!

Re: If you breastfed #1 when pregnant with #2
I'm 35 weeks pg with #2 and 21 mo old #1 is still BF. My OB told me to stop way back but I didn't. I tried to gently discourage her, stop offering but she's relentless. The past few weeks I've been a bit more insistent about her stopping. I just really don't want to BF two, it sorta overwhelms me. I wanted DD to self wean but that doesn't seem to be happening.
My supply went way down once I was pregnant and nursing got to be somewhat painful. By halfway through the pregnancy I'd say I was totally dried up, but DD would still BF before bed and naps and in the morning when she woke. She didn't seem to mind, it definitely is more of a comfort thing for her.
I do notice contractions when she nurses but they go away as soon as we stop. It has never concerned me, as you get the same contractions with DTD. Unless you're high risk or have certain issues, doctors never say that is a problem.
