If you BF past 1 year... need weening advice?
My DD is 21 months and I would like her to be weened by 2. She BF first thing in the AM, before her nap (only if we are home, if we are out we skip it) and before bed. The sessions are usually quick
I was hoping she would self ween, but I don't see that happening.
Any advice on encouraging her to ween, or on forcing her to ween would be appreciated.
TIA

Re: If you BF past 1 year... need weening advice?
I weaned DS by 21 months. The first session that I dropped was the night time one. DH put him to bed for about a week and he didn't really look for it. DS did take a pacifier which made it easier. The last month before he was weaned he would only nurse in the mornings. It wasn't intentional, but I had to take a week long class and I was out of the house by 6am which was before he woke up. So, he did not nurse in the morning for that week. I put away the boppy pillow and after the week was over he did not really look for it anymore. I really think the pacifier helped a lot though.

Re: If you BF past 1 year... need weening advice?
Is she asking for it? My older son self weaned at 15 months. I was 2 months pregnant at the time, so I sort of "helped" the process along without forcing it. I decided to take the "don't offer, don't refuse" approach with him. By the time he was a little over a year, he was only nursing morning and bedtime. I decided not to automatically offer it to him to see what happened. He very quickly gave up the morning session, just never really looked for it or asked for it. The nighttime one, he held onto for a little while longer, as it was part of our bedtime routine. So what I did was, I brought a cup of milk (cow's milk) up to his room with us when it was time for bed. We would sit in the glider and I'd hand him the milk while I started to read books (We usually did books, then nurse, then bed.). So he had something to drink, to occupy him. If at any point, he asked to nurse, I would nurse him with no problem, and then hand him the cup after he was finished so he could have more cow's milk if he wanted. After a few weeks of doing this, he stopped asking to nurse. I have heard others suggest letting your husband put the baby to bed so they don't look to nurse, and also changing the bedtime routine (like doing books/massage/songs/whatever your routine is in a different room, or adding something new the routine, or changing the order, etc.). HTH!

She asks for it...more like DEMANDS it...especially in the morning. I think I will start bringing a cup of cows milk with me in the morning when I go in to get her, thanks for the idea! She has gone to sleep without BF when my husband or babysitter have put her to bed, but if I'm there she expects it. I like the idea of switching up our routine as a way of maybe distracting her before bedtime.
THANK YOU!!!

Thank you! She never took a pacifier, but my husband is on vacation next week so I hope he can do a lot of the bedtime/wake up routines with her as a way to avoid BFing. I'm HOPING that after the week, she will kind of forget about it or at least be less demanding of it.
THANK YOU!

Re: If you BF past 1 year... need weening advice?
I "cut off" DD at 21 months also as I too could see no sign of her giving it up. She was only nursing before bed at that point. The first night I just sat in the rocking chair with her and rocked her. She slowly slid down into her nursing position, so I let her nurse. The 2nd night, I tried again to just rock her and she was OK with it. Put her in her crib, and she went to sleep. Never looked back after that!!
I cut out the morning feeding when she was 14 months. She was getting a bottle of milk after her morning nursing, so one morning, I just brought the bottle in and again, that was the end of that. She was pretty easy to wean!

Re: If you BF past 1 year... need weening advice?
Everytime he asked to nurse i would offer a sippy cup of water/milk or food if that did not work I would say they were broken and show bandaids on them... if that did not work distract when that did not work i would let him nurse. eventually at 21 months he just stopped asking and self weaned with a just a lil help from mama lol
