Is it really as easy as it seems? I feel like I'm missing something... Just fill out the 5405 form on the website, send in a copy of that HUD agreement and we're all set? Do we also have to refile our taxes in general, is that what I'm missing?

you can't just fill out the form and send it in, it must be attached to either an original return (if you haven't filed) or an amended return if you already filed 2009

Ok, so humor me for a minute since I'm tax clueless. We had our taxes done by a local tax guy, I'd rather not pay him more money so to amend our 09 taxes, is there another form we have to fill out to do this? TIAChat Icon

ETA: Just looked at the irs site, is it the 1040X that we have to fill out to amend?

I highly recommend you amend them with an accountant or CPA. Amended returns are the most reviewed returns. if he pushed it just a little bit, I would hate to see you get audited. It shouldn't cost you much to amend them with him for the credit and then you have peace of mind its done right.

Otherwise, you need to amend what he did on your own. not really that easy, unless you used 1040ez form the first time around.

I had mine amended through my accountant. he only charged 60.00 total and we did my husbands and mine separately. very easy. it isn't e-filed though, so it took about 8 weeks to receive the money.
