If someone cursed you out...

at work...what would you do? I know I work in a more professionally relaxed, high tension environment...but c'mon...

I manage a new music franchise where when certain artists are picked we shoot a performance. The performances are contracted out of house and have been through the two channels here for a couple of years...basically it was not policed well and the performances stink visually. After coming into the fold a couple of months ago I gave pages and pages of notes on each "rough" cut I was sent, and then I was the told to start attending perfromances...

Well, the sheeyat hit the fan in a major way on Monday when I gave my input while standing with a label rep. He asked me "what the f? what the f are you talking about? this is f-in ridiculous" whilst banging stuff around the control like a bif fat baby... I was floored but said nothing other than can't you see where I am coming from and he responded "no, I f-in can't" and stormed out...technically I am the client so I was mad, but shaking...

He apologized and we made semi-nice, but I had to go back there today where it was sooo tense I left there with a knots in my tummy and I felt myself holding back on all the stuff he sux at and I wanna change...

What should I do when we shoot a major artist next week?

Instead of shooting the major artist shoot him....literallyChat Icon

I guess there isn't much you can do since he apologized but at the first F bomb you hear next week you should let him know right then your not putting up with being cursed at...hopefully he will have grown up by then and you won't have a problemChat Icon

Re: If someone cursed you out...

I wouldn't change anything you did. You were professional and handled yourself accordingly. You were doing your job... people need to deal with it. If anyone ever spoke to me like that, I would calmly state that I won't be spoken to like that.

Chat Icon I don't care what industry you are in - that's extremely unprofessional - ESPECIALLY if you are the client!!

I don't know if I'm understanding your position in all of this well enough to really comment on what you should do but it sounds to me like you expect a certain quality of product and if you are the client and they are not delivering, you have every right to, and even an obligation to, criticize their work. It sounds to me like your name would be on the line if you were to accept junk from them so why put yourself out there. I'm surprised to hear that he reacted that way... I would be professional with him but let him know in subtle ways that he is on thin ice. And keep up your constructive criticism!

I agree! As for the major artist next week, I would probably sit down with the jerk so he is crystal clear what you want & what is expected of him. I could see him starting up or kissing up in front the artist.

Re: If someone cursed you out...

Thanks everyone...it just stinks because I have to basically stand behind him while he's directing...it's sooooooo uncomfortable...I have a great rapport with the label reps so I am not concerned about how I look in front of the artist because they (the reps) know I have their best interests at heart which is making a good product...I just don't want to have a scene if I need them to do the song over...I feel like it's coming as I get more and more vocal because he just SUX...

I am a strong person, but I am EXTREMELY non-confrontational and it makes me uncomfortable knwoing that he has a voodoo doll of me and a TON of pics...oooh, my back hurts now...

Re: If someone cursed you out...

obviously you are the better person. He sounds like a big baby that can't handle any difference to his opinion.

Honestly, I don't know how I would have reacted aside from Chat Icon asking him if he was kidding me when his antics started.Chat Icon

Re: If someone cursed you out...

I have had customers act this way and being that they are customers, I brush it off and let it go. In my opinion, it is better to ignore it and move on as it shows that you are the bigger person.

Re: If someone cursed you out...

hes a crass jerk and lost his temper.

Fortunately, you handled it the best way. It sux that you will have to deal with this guy again, however, i do think you should keep critiquing honestly. at the end of the day, its your project, and if its not the way you want it to be, it will be a poor reflection on you. keep doing your job and try not to let this idiot get in the way of your good work.

Re: If someone cursed you out...

DH has taught me how valuable it is to look out for #1 (being myself) cause everyone else out their is looking out for #1 (themselves) and you should be doing it to. this is my mantra and helps me get thru each day at work. it may sound obnoxious...but next time you get into a tight situation, think it and it will work!

Look out for #1 ! Chat Icon
