If my milk doesn't come in for 3 days...
I keep reading that it usually takes a few days for our milk to come in. Does the baby exist just on colostrum until then?

My milk didn't come into until the 4th day and DD was satisfied on just colostrum. As a matter of fact she gained 1/2lb at her one week visit.

Re: If my milk doesn't come in for 3 days...
I had DS on a Friday and my milk came in that following Monday (so I guess 4 days)
DS lost 12oz in those 4 days- and it made me crazy! From what Ive seen in friends who BF it happens often, and once they get their milk in the child gains it back...
DS was back to his birthweight in 10 days... (ie: therefore he was gaining more than an oz/day once my milk came in... and the avg. in the beg is an .5-1oz/day)

Mine came in on my 4th day. I did give Lucas 1oz of formula in the hospital just to keep him happy.

Yes, because as a lactation Consultant told me in the hopital when i said "All I am gettng so far is colostrum", It's not just colostrum, it's liquid gold!
That thing is so packed with nutrients andn calories, that in the first few days of life it is better for the baby than even BM itself. Mother Nature is very smart.
BTW, all babies lose a few oz of weight in the first 2-3 days of their lives.

Totally. I didn't BF with my first and didn't even think about nursing pads until the 4th day when I started leaking. They weighed her before we were discharged and before they told me her weight said, "it's normal for them to lose several ounces" she lost .5 lb. I think.
