If he's content and happy...

James is not a fussy baby at all. The only time he cries is when he's hungry. If he's awake and alert and happy is it bad if I put him in PNP so I can get some stuff done around the house? He loves the PNP - he'll nap in there, hang out, look at the mobile... DH doesn't have a problem with this, but I feel guilty - like if he's awake, I should be holding him Chat Icon I do a ton of things with him during the day, read to him, tummy time, activity mat, swing, go for walks...

Thoughts?

I used to put Kaydyn in her bouncer (it was the only thing she liked) so that I could so stuff. She was perfectly content to sit there and listen to the music.

I say don't feel guilty! I used to drive myself nuts with this and still do. I think it's important for babies and children to have time by themselves. My DD has always been very content to be chilling out by herself. Of course, I've always played with her and read to her, etc. Allow yourself to enjoy the fact that your DC is so content and happy. Chat Icon The way I see it is that it needs to be balanced.

No, its not bad. Do what you have to do. Iwould keep DS (from 7wks) in the High chair and roll him around the house room to room when I had things to do. I do this now, when I have to shower I stick him in there with some puffs and do my thing. He loves it.

Thanks ladies - Like I said, I feel guilty not holding him and stuff when he's awake, but I guess it does foster a sense of self-sufficiency and I'm guessing it's a good thing that he doesn't need to be held 24/7?

Re: If he's content and happy...

I am lucky, like you, Sean was the same way - Only cried (cries) when he's hungry - (or had bad gas) So, for a baby that's easy, IMO it's a GOOD thing for you to leave him alone at times (Other than when he's sleeping) From Day 1 I would put Sean in the swing or bouncy seat or his crib to take a shower, run in the basement to do laundry, put my makeup on, etc etc. - I NEVER had him with me 24/7. I didn't bring him from room to room with me -

If I'm doing something like cooking that's going to take me awhile, I'll bring him in the kitchen with me to 'help' - but to run the vacum around or do laundry to shower or make the bed - whatever ....no.

At 6 months he's perfectly happy to sit and play by himself, OR with me. Personally, I think it's a good thing for him.

Re: If he's content and happy...

it's not bad at all!!! if they are content, leave them! it's good for him to learn to entertain himself...don't feel guilty in the least! When DD wakes up from her naps I leave her in there for at least 10 mins, sometimes 30 if she is having fun...it's good fot them to be OK with being alone.

Re: If he's content and happy...

I WISH DS was content like that. He is only good for 5 minutes in anything. The swing, bouncy seat, activity mat, etc. As soon as that 5 minute mark hits, he screams bloody murder. You should see my house right now!!!! Looks like a bomb went off Chat Icon

ITA. I have girlfriends that would LOVE to put their child down for a minute or even walk out of the room for a second to pee and "can't" because of the wails that follow. My DS was just like yours and all along and even now as a toddler, I give him some "alone" time so he can learn to occupy himself and not need to be entertained and luckily, we've had no separation issues with him having stated preschool this year.

Don't feel bad at all! I let DS play by himself all the time. I think it is good for them to learn to entertain themselves.

Re: If he's content and happy...

i actually had a big thing against holding ds all day... i would put him n the swing, the bouncy seat, or on the entertainer, or even put him in the high chair reclined while i did stuff... i have spent alot of time trying to get him so that he can actually play by himself and it has paid off since he actually prefers to play alone then having an adult play with him

what! dont feel guilty! I read somewhere that they need time by themselves too and dont always want to be in your face. You need a breather too.
