ICT (Inclusion) Class for General Ed Student
Hi, Just found out DD is going to be in the ICT (inclusion) class for the upcoming school year. (She's regular Ed.) She's going into 1st. I was just curious if anyone's child was ever in an inclusion class...did you have a good experience? Any negatives? She's very shy and doesn't talk to me about her school day...not sure if that's relevant.

ICT (Inclusion) Class for General Ed Student
I teach coteach at the high school level. I honestly do not see any negative for the general ed students. They only really difference in my class is that there are two teachers. This means that all the students get additional attention when they need it.

Re: ICT (Inclusion) Class for General Ed Student
From the moms that had their kids in inclusion classes this year... they thought that it was preferable to a regular class with a higher teacher:kid ratio. So, each kid got extra attention and individual teaching.

Re: ICT (Inclusion) Class for General Ed Student
I think it depends on the model of the class. Our Inclusion classes aren't true inclusion. They are consultant teacher, but call them inclusion. So the special ed teacher is only in there for 42 minutes a day, there is a full time aide in there. My daughter was in this class last year for fourth grade. Not a good experience, her class was like a circus. Problems every single day. Tons of behavior children. The problems didn't really come from only the special education students though, they came from the gen ed students that have behavior problems, but are put in that class because of more "eyes". I'm empathetic, and love the typical inclusion model (my son has autism and has been a classified student in these models), but I'm really hoping for NO inclusion class this year. My daughter is a good student, and can handle it, but I got sick and tired of hearing about the incidents happening every.single.day.

ICT (Inclusion) Class for General Ed Student
my daughter was a general ed student in an inclusion class in K and it was her favorite year so far! She had less kids in the class and 2 teachers. It was a positive for her. Last year in a regular 2nd grade class her class was like a circus. She had more behavioral issue incidents in that class then she ever did in the inclusion class

Re: ICT (Inclusion) Class for General Ed Student
My son is a general ed student that was in an inclusion class for 1st grade. They had 1 teacher but only 13 kids. He had an amazing experinece bc his teacher was phenomenal! My son thrived this year and developed such a love for school. It can definitely be a rewarding experience. Also, he didn't really realize that some other kids had certain challenges/difficulties. He'd just occasionally mention that someone needed extra help with something.

Our district calls it co-lab. My daughter has completed k and 1st in co-lab. It's been an amazing experience and my daughter did fantastic. This year she has 28 kids and 2 teachers one gen Ed and one special Ed 12 kids in the class had an IEP. I can't really think of any negatives. Feel free to fm if you have any questions.

ICT (Inclusion) Class for General Ed Student
My nephew was in a K inclusion class. At first my sister was concerned but after him being in the class she actually loved it. Because there is extra staff the kids get more attention.

I've taught ICT. No negatives. The big positive is all of the kids get more individual attention because there are two teachers. There is also more differentiation. Win. Win.

All of this I also feel like it gives students exposure to atypical students and fosters compassion and patience.

That is so wrong. In my district, gen. ed. students with behavior issues are NOT put in the inclusion classes and dispersed amongst the other regular gen. ed classes.
And only 42 minutes for the special ed teacher? That's crazy to me. Do you know what percentage of the kids have IEPs?

My nephew has been in ICT as a gen ed student and my SIL has had nothing but positive feedback to share. She has said that he got more individualized help when needed.

I'm not sure that it's on purpose, or the policy, but that is what we have all gathered. More eyes with the aide. But who knows!! I think there were 6 classified students. 22 kids total in the class. She pushes in or pulls out for 42 minutes (42 minutes is a period in our district). My son was in the same model when he was in elementary school for 3, 4, 5th grade, and we had no issues with the set up. It's not inclusion, it's consultant teacher direct, but, everyone refers to it as inclusion, and they really have no idea how it works. I only know because of my son.

Re: ICT (Inclusion) Class for General Ed Student
DD was in an inclusion class for K and it was amazing. her teachers were great. there were 2 full time teachers plus 2 full time aides and only 17 kids in the class. there were extra people around to help DD with reading. All the kids and parents were fantastic. I am hoping it happens again for next year. I also felt like she was exposed to and made friends with kids she might not have otherwise. I am hoping that my son in 2 years gets the same class and teachers.

Just spoke to one of the moms and she requested her daughter stay with the inclusion class next year (for the attention).

Re: ICT (Inclusion) Class for General Ed Student
Totally depends on your child. One of my kids has done ok in these classes. The other one does not. For the child who did not like his class, he was very distracted and complained often about certain behaviors going on in the classroom. My one takeaway with both kids , they were both more unsettled and frustrated after the school day so I prefer gen ed classes for my kids. I don't think they will ever put one of my children in an ITC class, it wasn't the right environment for him. I am lucky the school does their absolute best to accommodate all of the children. Most parents do love these classes, I think I am the minority.

Nyc or long island?
If nyc i say no. I taught ict for 3 years and up to 12 of the students can have ieps and I think that is too much and sometimes the ict room becomes a place to stick the non iep kids who have behavioral issues etc

We have up to 12 on LI as well. And there CAN be more than 12 with a variance.

Ok... I know in my husbands LI district there are only 2-3 in each class with a licenses TA but I know this isnt true ICT.

Re: ICT (Inclusion) Class for General Ed Student
I'll be honest, initially I thought I would never want my gen ed kid in an inclusion class. Once he was in it, I loved it and would put him in it every year if I had the choice. There are more adults in the room, which means more supervision and less behavior issues. (DS's gen ed classes were out of control).
