Re: I thought...
I know! Last night on the 11 o'clock news they said 1-3 inches total for LI.
I'm pushing my kids to be meterologists. What other job can you be COMPLETELY wrong and not get fired?

me too!!!
They havent a clue and how is that with all this MILLION Dollar equipment?
Rather just buy a $5 Farmers Almanac.....
5-10 inchs predicted before turning to rain, but then tonights temps are going to fall below freezing again creating ice conditions

It wasn't going to snow bad... I thought they said it would be over before it started I know. I need to be a TV weather person. You get all your clothes bought for you, you get to be on TV, and you don't have to be right most of the time
Of course I think if people see the TV weather people on the street they might not be very nice to them

As a Meteorology major in COllege I take offense!
Seriously though, lots of things happen. Systems change and move hour by hour so what they think is going to happen usually changes. What happened probably is that the system moved more than they expected and the rain/snow line changed. I haven't looked at any maps to see if I'm correct though.

Re: I thought...
I'm sorry but I really hate the meteorolgist bashing. Its a very difficult job that requires A LOT of education. PREDICTING the weather is not an exact science, thats why its called predicting. They are right more than they are wrong, but we just notice when they are wrong. I don't know why I feel such sympathy for meterologists, maybe its because I really wanted to be one until I learned how much math was involved in the major

That is exactly what they said this morning. The rain line is 50- 75 miles south of where they expected and since it was to slice right through the metro area, it had a profound effect on the weather.
I think, rather than pin down these things to the precise neighborhood, they should give the "alternate ending." KWIM? Like say most likely 3 - 6 inches, but a chance that the rain line might move & dump 6 - 9 inches.

When I was in high school, my ES teacher called the rain-snow line the "homework" line.
